New Puppy Jealousy-how long does it last? Hi everyone- Don't get a chance to post much, but I have been reading your threads for a long time now. I have a 1 year old yorkie named Amos and yesterday we brought home a new baby sister (yorkie) for him. She is just so precious! He is such a loving dog and sooooooo friendly to other people and dogs that I didn't think it would be a problem at all. But now he is really mad at us. He won't acknowledge that I'm speaking to him and he won't even look at my husband and usually my husband can't get him to stop kissing him. Has anyone else experienced this, and how long did it take before the hurt feelings started to go away? I'm really worried about him. |
Welcome to yt PrinceAmos. Glad you finally came out of hiding. I have the same problem. My Sketter was here first an when I brought Annie on board he was so mad at me. That part didnt last to to long but its been 6 weeks now and thay fight like crazy. Sometimes it gets pretty bad. I guess you just have to keep showing your first one you still love them, also i read you need to let the first one do everything first. Like first to be fed , come from outside ect.... My vet also told me that. Just be patient thay will come around. post pitcures of your babies. |
I know all about jealousy! Princess used to pee on everything out of jealousy, especially the bed and blankets on the couch. Make sure to give Amos extra attention so he still feels loved, I know its hard because the new puppy is so cute. Give him a few weeks and he should get over it. :) |
Thanks for the advice about the putting him first thing. I also forgot to mention one more thing that Amos did that worried me. He peed on the floor this morning-right in front of me about 5 minutes after he went outside! He hasn't peed in the house in six months! I hope this is just an acting out thing and not regression on house breaking. I'll try to post pictures later today. |
Hes just making sure you know hes there just incase ... ha Anyway thay do that and much more. Sketter has done that to me also. Hang in there it will get better. |
When I got Hallie, Simon had a fit! So I started leaving Hallie with my mom and having some Simon-Mommy time just the 2 of us. We would go for walks together and just hang out. It really helped out with his jealousy. Welcome to YT, can't wait to see pics of both of your babies! |
Thanks for the reassurance. :) |
It gets so bad with Sketter and Annie that it scares me sometimes. I basically resued Annie from a not so good home and thas why i have her. Now i am going to sell her, but im afraid to get the tiny yorkie that i want cause im afraid Sketter will hurt her so im really in a delima. |
In my case, it took Sophie around a week to decide to accept Daisy. Not long after, they became best buddies and it has remained that way for 6 weeks! :) When I come home, they are so excited to see me. But when I pick them up, they start licking/kissing each other, not me :D |
My first dog did the same thing Tequi, my first dog, a chihuahua was totally housetrained and never, ever had accidents. Until about two months after I got Mini, a yorkie, she decides to mark all the area rugs in my house. I recently put down wood floors and purchased new rugs. She christened every one of them, right in front of me. The other area rugs I had on my carpet, she doesn't bother with. I guess, it's the new smell and she wants Mini to know who they belong to. They are just like kids. |
The first dog is the Top Dog ! You have to remember to greet your first dog first, even though puppies are so darn cute and you can't help wanting to just watch them all the time. You have to sweet talk and baby talk your first dog just as much. I have found it takes about 2 week for the top dog to realize that the new ball of fluff is not going anywhere. |
I have always put Sketter first. But he just refuses to accept Annie. I've taken him out by myself, fed first, greet first, playwith him more, i've done it all but he just will not let Annie anywhere near me. He is totally momas baby and thats it. It's funny at times Sketters on one end of the room with me an Annies on the other with daddy. Thay are just as bad as kids. I feel so bad sometimes cause Annie knows she can not come over to me. she just stays away because she knows Sketter will attack her. I really hate that but what do ya do. |
