Need advice for 2month old yorkie Hello everyone! I need some advice... In 3 weeks I will be bringing home a 2month on yorkie, named Bella (SHE IS SO SWEET!!!! ), and well I just need some advice on early care for her. I have a 2 yr old yorkie, and he's been with us since he was 7 months, so I pretty much got it from that age, but the more advice the better. One of my biggest questions is if I will have to bottle feed her or should she already be weened? Thanks so much everyone! ***BTW, I can't remember how to post, I have only done it once and that was back in June of 2008, so I hope this gets out there. |
Hi there! congrats on your new addition. I myself just got a new baby and have a 2yr old also. I know you must be very excited. I know I was. I am concerned that the breeder is letting her go so early. Puppies are usually weaned and on food before 8 weeks. You will find multiple similar posts here about the same topic..and some not too nice ones. My intentions are pure and because i am honestly concerned. Please do not feel i am judging you in any way. I certainly will try to help you anyway i can. I can tell you I bought a xpen and keep the baby Piper away from Bella when she is not in my eye sight. Esp if i have to leave the house or am sleeping. Bella is incredibly sweet and has made not attempts in front of me to harm Piper..but because Piper is a baby she pounces on Bella. I guess what i am saying is.. I fear that it could happen that Bella might just get fed up and strike back. Piper is playing non stop because she is a puppy. My Bella just sucks it up and sleeps hard at night now..lol My baby came to me already potty trained and eating great. She is very very smart. I cant imagine getting one so young. I got Piper when she was 16 weeks old and Bella when she was 12 weeks old. Is there a reason the breeder is letting her go so early?? Again.. I am going thru this now ..just a few weeks ahead of you. Please pm me with any questions!! Lisa |
I got mine at 8wks. old. She was eating watered down dry food. I never had any problems. In no time she was eating it dry. Congrats on your baby:aimeeyork |
Thank you so much for the advice. It's so funny that you have a Bella, because that is exactly what I have named her. The family I am getting Bella from aren't breeders, so I don't think they have all the knowledge that they should as far as the whole process. They got the basics done, like tails docked, dew claw removed, and May 12th they are due for their first set of shots. I'm not too worried about my Lucky, he's really calm and passive, well unless someone knocks on the door or rings the doorbell! LOL! He's nuts! All in all he's really sweet. Well wish me luck, and good luck to you! |
Congrads on your baby! However, the only suggestion I could make at this time is to have your newest edition stay with the Breeder at least another two weeks AT MINIMUM! Why is s/he letting her go so young??? |
We got our baby at 9 weeks and our biggest issue was getting him to eat at first. We had to buy canned dog food and warm it a little and literally force his mouth open and put it on his tongue after the first initial bite he would eat it but only from our hands. This lasted about 3 days then he went on to his kibble. Also make sure you have nutri-stat on hand in case of hypoglycemia attacks. Other than that just lots and lots of love. I know lots say they aren't well socialized and maybe some aren't but we really have not had issues with Laddy on that front. Good luck. :doghouse:Charlene:Pawprint:Mama to Laddy:Pawprint::doghouse: |
I got June at the age of 8 weeks and she has done just fine. Breeders in South Africa don't keep them over 8 weeks, so we don't have a choice. June is in her expen with all her things when I am not at home or unable to supervise her. I think the most important thing to remember is that they don't have much bladder or bowel control yet, so try not to get frustrated. June eats all her food, no problem. She plays with Cash and he loves it. He gets a wee bit rough sometimes, but otherwise she holds her own. I would suggest getting or making her some panties (pm sweetviolet for a free pattern if you like to sew) to help with housetraining. Good luck and I know that everyone worries over such a young pup, but she will do just fine. Keep Nutrical or sugar water on hand to regulate blood sugar. |
I will be getting my pup at 9 weeks. As in South Africa, in the UK, from 8 weeks is the norm. He is already eating some dry puppy food, along with things like scrambled egg, weatabix etc. My concern at that age is the stress of moving, and the effects of hypoglycemia, so I will be making sure he is eating, and if not, giving him nutrical, as it is normal for pups not to want to eat too much for the first few days in a strange place. |
i got toby at 8 weeks and his first day home he only ate about 4 little kibbles. by his second and definately by the third day he was gobbling his food!! ask your breeder what he eats...they should be able to help. ps i have family that lived in oceanside for many years, now they are in temecula... i love california  |

Thank you all so much! Your advice will be very helpful. I can't wait to bring my little one home! |
If you are going to bring home a puppy that young, please do some research on this website about hypoglycemia. I got my Missy when she was only 7 weeks old. I was sure glad that I knew what to do when her blood sugar levels dropped. It can be pretty serious. |
Welcome to YT..Just make sure she eats and drinks 4 to 6 times a day at that age. Closer to 6 times small meals and water. Nutri cal is very important to keep blood sugar levels up. Good Luck and send us some pics |
