HELP! Don't know what to do! Our baby boy Thor is 15 weeks! We are paper training him as where we live it's cold majority of the year (can get as cold at -40C in the winter!) and plus we live in an apartment! He was doing SO well with his paper training, that I basically considered him trained. I have no idea what happened, but he rarely goes on his paper anymore! He will just pee on the floor right in front of us, we say No in my mean mommy voice, and put him on his papers and he just doesn't care. He was SO well before, just unbelievable how quick he picked up on paper training. I would say he is worse now then he was when we got him when he was 8 weeks! As well, he doesn't respond when we call him, or even when we are saying NO it takes us getting up to approach him to stop whatever he is doing. He NEVER comes when he is called! We do crate train him, and he likes it in his 'house' as I call it. He sleeps in it at night, and when we aren't home, but when we are home I keep his 'house' open and he goes in and out and can run around the apartment. We walk him every 2nd night for at least half an hour! Any advice? Our carpet is getting ruined, plus I want a good puppy who pees in the right spot!! :aimeeyork |
Laddy went through this for a few days and even now at 6 months if he gets upset with us will mark somewhere in the house. We just tell him no bad puppy and put him in his crate and ignore him for 5 to 10 minutes and he will go for weeks being good after that unless we make him mad again lol. Good luck and just have patience. :doghouse:Charlene:Pawprint:Mama to Laddy:Pawprint::doghouse: |
Hi! I know it can be so frustrating during the baby & training stages. I remember very well. My advice would be not to let Thor have run of the apartment until he is much much older. A secure gated off area for now will help him learn & is for his own safety. When Bella was a puppy, she did well with potty training, but she would occasionally forget, especially while playing fetch with us.....all of a sudden she would have to go & in her excitement would go right there! She was more interested in 'playing'. Good news::) it does get better with repetition, praise, praise, praise & the smaller area confinement. Thor is a cutie! |
Have you tried the washable pee pads. Thats what I use and they work great. When I see them using the potty on them they get a treat. I have one dog that will make you think he is using them just to get a treat:rolleyes: |

You can also get some "Wee Wee Wraps, or Belly Bands until you are comfortable letting Thor run the house without having an accident. That way your carpet will not get ruined so fast. Ben is almost a year old and is pretty much completely potty trained but when he run of the house to where I cant watch him every second, he has a belly band on just in case! Dont worry it will get better. Thor is still just a puppy! :) |
Thor has way too much freedom if he has the run of your apartment and is having accidents. Try keeping him in an exercise pen with his "house" and pads while you are away and when you are not able to watch him with 100% of your attention. Take him to his pads after eating, playing and sleeping. Stay with him so you can praise him when he potties where he is supposed to. Give him a treat and a happy dance. Dogs respond much better to positive reinforcement than they do to scolding. Make sure you get him neutered as soon as your vet says he's old enough, usually no later than six months. You don't want him to start marking. That's a housebreaking habit that is nearly impossible to correct once they start. |
