Important Question
 
If a dog is not breathing, like air is not going thru her lungs, and she is taken to the emergency vet what can they do? Isn't there a tube they can put in their throat to give them oxygen?

Well, most likely they will first try to Heimlich to see if something needs to be dislodged. After that, they *could* try intubation - but if you don't know if something is stuck, it may not be an option. It also depends on how long the dog has been w/out oxygen and whether or not they can get the heart beating. If the heart cannot be restarted, there would be no reason to intubate. :(

I really dont know the right answer, but when they anaesthetise animals, they have a tube down the throat, so maybe they do the same type of thing in an emergency. :confused:

I'm not sure.

But I just wanted to say try not to torture yourself with the what ifs. I know how you are feeling, and I had so many questions too, but it didnt bring Millie back and it wont bring Sophie back.

Maybe you think the vets were negligant? The thing is, if Sophie had been with out oxygen since you left the house, and they had gotten her breathing again with a tube, she might've been brain damaged since if she was starved of oxygen.

I totally understand how you are feeling. I wonder all the time if I had taken Millie to a different vet, if I had not taken to get her spayed....

Since Millie died, I have noticed so many posts about tragic deaths of young Yorkies. Its so hard, and I dont know why it happens to the ones that are so loved and well looked after. It is so unfair.

Sophie's heart was beating when i took her in but her tongue was blue so she appeared not to be breathing. Her eyes were still open but she was kinda out of it, not responding

I thought about Sophie all night and talked to my hubby about her too bc I couldn't get her out of my mind. I just can't think of what happened :confused:. The few things that come to mind are that she got something stuck in her throat (but how/why did she whine/squeal?), or that she experienced some trauma like running into something very hard that caused her trachea to be injured - or a rib to puncture a lung - like maybe she ran into something or fell? I just don't know Sarah - but it's not been far from my mind since I read about it last night....bc I just don't understand it. Not that you want to drag things out, but sometimes a follow-up call w/ the vet can help you put things to rest - perhaps you could call and ask them, that since her heart was beating - what did they suspect and try? Could she have gotten into anything poisonous? Gum, candy?

Honey would it have made you feel better had you asked the vet to do a post mortem on you baby.. sometimes know answers many questions and does not leave you in the what happened !!! what if kinda world, the unknown is what makes you questions.. something to think about..again I know exactly how your feeling... been 5 years for me.. and it is always there... no matter how much I love the babies I have now..hugs anne

You're right, i dont know how she could have made noise if she was choking. I'm trying not to do 'what ifs' but its hard. When i found her she was in her peepee pad area... i have baby gates around the pads, but the gate was open and she was in there and after i heard the whine i walked in and she stood on her 2 feet like she was trying to get out the gates, but thats when i knew something was wrong cause the gate was open. And she did it again like she was uncomfortable. Maybe it was something with her stomach, she had a lot of gas sometimes but we thought that was normal. London is so sad, she looks depressed.

Could she have been bitten by something extremely toxic over in that area? Spiders? I don't want you to have to re-live it, but what was her breathing like during the whole time? Was she pawing at the sides of her face at all (which dogs will do when choking)? (don't go there if you don't want to think about it/describe it)

Poor London :(. Wish I could give you all a big hug.

I'm going to try to ask him, but i know i'll get so upset just going back there. Maybe i will call. I just really didn't like that vet hospital though. I always see on animal cops they save dogs that are so close to death and then i think why her? why couldnt she survive? I know She is not suffering anymore and she's in a better place but still i keep having flashbacks and also about that horrible dream i had. My bf had to work today and he was crying, he didnt even want to go in. He loved her so much..she was so special, everyone here noticed. Such a special dog.

No there was nothing she could have gotten into. I safe proof my house, theres no bugs here, nothing. No she wasnt pawing at her face, she was completely limp by the time we were in the taxi. I even tried to stand her up on my lap and my poor baby fell on all fours, she couldnt even stand. She was limp like a rag doll. It's just a big mystery to us all

I know what you are going through. I lost Suri to a very tragic incident. What scares me is too many stories lately sound the same. I saw it happen, she fell over with her eyes open, heart beating, but she didn't make a sound. I did rescue breathing and as soon as her heart stopped CPR. I keep going over it and thinking what I could have done or maybe I did somethig wrong. :( I am beyond lost without her and my heart hurts. I have never felt so close to an animal and I am so scared that I will never have that again. She was my perfect girl and past way too early at almost 9 months, a few days before my birthday. We just have to be strong.

I am so sorry for what you have gone through losing Sophie. It is possible that she just had a stroke or heart attack. Had she been on heart worm preventative? Just a thought, I know a few years ago dogs were just dropping dead because of a new heart worm preventative that had come out. It was later recalled but I have heard that some of them on the market now can cause problems. The only way you would know for sure what happened is to have an autopsy done. My heart goes out to you. Both of these make me wonder about a Pulmonary Embolism. It does kind of fit -- I just don't know how common this is in dogs. It can result in very sudden death.

Has she been outside recently ??

I ask bc I took Roxy for a walk around my block on Sunday bc it was so nice outside. On Tuesday, she was *quiet* in the morning, she just lied in bed (usually, once she knows I am awake, she is bouncing all over the bed to get up). She turned on her back and I was rubbing her belling and I could hear some girgling noises. We got up and she refused her AM meal, only eating her favorite the apple bits. This is ODD, bc Roxy LOVES food, but she wouldn't eat. A little while later I found a huge apple vomit pile in my room. I left her home all day and when I got home at night she seemed better. I offered her dinner, and again, she refused to eat her food, only eating a few lettuce pieces. Within 1/2 she had such foul poop with mucus and blood, and then she vomited her lettuce. She is ok now, but she had to have picked up a *bug* or something on our walk :(

And something similar happened to 2 of my Mom\'s Yorkies a few weeks ago and she is in AZ...

IDK - I am so sorry :( :( :( :(
