Microchip checking Genghis has a microchip, and I think the idea of the microchip is great! However do shelters have the device that checks for microchips? I heard it's not mandatory for vets to check for microchips, I was wondering if shelters had them, otherwise what is the point? How do you know if the chip is still working? My vet hasn't checked it (I got the chip from a clinic before changing to my current vet). Are there places to find out if they still work? |
There are universal scanners out there...and I know AVID will send a scanner at no charge for any vet, shelter, rescue etc that requests one. If you want yours checked...have you asked your vet? |
ask your vet .. they should be happy to check it for you all found dogs should get routinely scanned if they fall into hands of re homing centers so they don't have to wait the 7 day owner finding time ..so it really is in their interest to scan as they have a kennel empty faster then waiting 7 days to re home |
Not all scanners read all chips so a microchip isn't 100% effective but I do have mine chipped because at least they would have a chance of being returned if they should get away from me. |

The clinic I got Genghis shots and microchip from checks every time. However when I got him neutered at the vet they did not check. I'm sure if I asked they would check. |

Chipping is a nice but really...if someone wants to keep your dog...they will. Mine all wear collars and tags because to me...that is the easiest, fastest way for someone to contact me....if they chose to that is. ;) |
Remy is going to the vet Tuesday and will be chipped during the visit... I did not know that the chips were not "universal" and that some kinds could not be read by all scanners... interesting... I will have to ask a few more questions when I am there next week... |
I think the next pup I get I will have the microchip done when I neuter/spay the pup, cause when Genghis got it he let out the most horrible yelp and he pooped on the vet. That needle made me want to vomit it looked like it hurt! |

Yikes! Riot's all set up to get chipped when he's neutered, the vet actually suggested it. It's an 18g needle. ouch! |
Yeah... the needle is HUGE! Couver was chipped, neutered and got his rabies all while he was sedated. It is easier on them that way :D |
I didn't have my dogs chipped, but I think it's a good idea. My dogs don't wear collars, either, so they don't have a nametag on them. I use a harness because I'm afraid of causing damage to their delicate windpipes. If I did get them chipped, I'd get new nametags with their name, phone number and the word, "CHIPPED" at the bottom. Maybe that would signal that they should scan them. |
My moms boxer was suppose to be chipped and when my mom had the vet check it either wasn't working or wasn't there. I am not chipping. I've never heard of any good stories of an animal getting returned because of a chip. |
