New yorkie Mom I'm picking up my babygirl today and I would like some advice for the best food, treats and shampoo for yorkies. Thank you:animal36 |

"Best" food is really all up to the owner (and their dog!) but there is a list of some of the top 5 and 6 star rated dog foods in the Health and Diet section here. Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble has a bunch of good info on them. Some of those choices are Merrick's, Wellness, Innova, Evo, Chicken Soup for the Dog's Soul, among others! Treats... well, you can look around places like Petco and Petsmart to find some of the best treats. Look at ingredients and make sure they're not TOO much fat or they'll get overweight on treats. I've been feeding mine Wellness treats, they have a bunch of different options. Solid Gold has good treats as well. Shampoo... I use BioGroom which you can now find at Petsmart. I have no complaints about it. A lot of people suggest Minksheen on here but I think you can only order it online and it can be considered costly! Congrats on your pup! |
Hi! :wavey: :welcome4: :yorkiesar How excited you must be!! Please post some pictures when you can. Have you decided on a name? You didn't say how old your pup is, so I'm going to assume young, say 12 weeks. Best food: it's always best to continue feeding what the breeder has been using and then if you want to switch, do so gradually after your pup has settled into her new home. There are many thread discussing food, try doing a search in the Health/Diet forum for some of them. Treats: I'd keep it simple at first. Cheerios are great and shouldn't upset a puppies system. I personally do not like rawhides because of the danger of choking. Shampoo: Again, there are many threads discussing the different shampoo's available. I'd stay away from human products and would use a puppy shampoo that is no tears. I started out with a brand from the pet store and have tried several of the higher quality brands. Right now we are trying Coat Handler and so far I'm pretty pleased, just wish it had a better scent. :p Only other piece of advice is to have some NutraCal on hand for any hyperglycemia emergencies. Again, congrats and I can't wait to see pictures! :) |
I love Eagle brand hollistic puppy its a high quality food and has teeny tiny kibble easy for little pups to eat, if you plan on switching the food the pup is currently on you will had to do it gradually!! Biogroom is available at Petsmart and Petco, I like the smell I have the whole line of products, wipes , shampoo and spray in conditioner..I also just ordered Minksheen For treats when Laci first came to me she was quite picky, she LOVES cherrios, old mothers hubbard puppy, little pieces of cheese and apples. Im fairly new to the puppy thing too but have found all these products help. She also loves Bullysticks for teething !! |

Congrats!! I just started giving Innova to Lola! She seem to like it so far. I wouldn't go with the Evo..too much protein Cant wait for the photos:) |

I'm sorry, I didn't put alot of information about the yorkie that I'm getting today. Her name is Bella and she is only 9 weeks old. |
excited, but curious How often do you use the spray in condtioner? After every bath? I was told that you shouldn't brush your yorkie without putting water on the brush first. Is this true |
How often do I need to use the NutraCal? |

No need for water if you use the spray. |
Congratulations, and welcome to YT!! Can't wait to see pics of your new baby! There are several good shampoos and conditioners that most local stores carry. I agree with starting with a no-tears puppy shampoo. Also, there are many good quality foods available. You will not find these foods at grocery stores, department stores or Petsmart. Do you have a local feed/agriculture store, or a pet boutique? These places offer the best selection of quality foods, and the employees are usually more knowledgeable. |
Congrats! I just got my little girl last weekend! We are loving her!! I have decided to use Halo food. A lot of people on here use it and it was recommended to me by a vet. It is all-natural, and has very premium ingredients. Halo Spot's Stew is the name of the food. As far as shampoo, I haven't gotten it yet, but I am going to be ordering MinkSheen soon. I like the Halo treats as well, and Snausages. Good luck! |

The first month or so, whenever I'd be taking Gracie Ruth out with me, I'd be sure to pack it along with some of her kibble, a few treats and a bottle of water. I'd offer her some kibble several times while we were out, I just wanted the NutralCal along in case she needed a quick shot of sugar. |
