6 yr old Yorkie jealous of boyfriend I have a six year old Yorkie that has recently developed some very jealous behavior to humans. He stayed with my parents for a month and a half in the winter and every time they kissed or hugged one another, he would jump up on them and bark. Well recently I started dating someone after being single for quite some time. My dog is out of control. If we're even sitting on the couch together, he becomes aggressive and barks. If we try to go to the bedroom together alone, he barks at the door and scratches frantically without giving up. If we let him in the room, he barks and growls at the bed. One time he even bit my date, which is obviously not ok! I've tried giving him different treats to play with as a distraction, but that doesn't seem to work. I'm desperate! I'm even afraid my boyfriend will break up with me unless I can get this resolved. Any ideas? |
Your boyfriend needs to be the giver of all good things. Have him give him a special treat that your yorkie doesnt get from anyone else. Encourage your boyfriend to play with him and take him for a walks. Also I think a training class and learning obediance would be good for him |
Well, congratulations on the new boyfriend lol, and I think the previous post is perfect advice...But to show you how smart these little ones are, my Apple is perfectly at peace w/the world, UNTIL I get on the phone! It's like she knows someone else has my attention, and she goes nuts...Aren't they tripendicular lol... Maggie & Apple:aimeeyork |
I think you should also give him time outs for bad behavior. Like if he barks, he gets moved off the sofa, or into the bathroom until he stops. I have been single and hoping to change that at some point. I do wonder how Thor will react when he has to share my attention. |
My boys are jealous of my bf, but not aggressive... they will not let us lay next to each other, they need to lay between us... if we kiss or hug they will jump on our legs (if we are standing) or in our lap (if we are sitting) and whine/bark at us. Over time they have gotten MUCH better. My boyfriend takes them out every morning which is their favorite thing, and he gives them treats. They really have gotten much better but it takes time, it won't happen in a week or even a month... just keep at it and he'll eventually change his mind! :) Good Luck! |

When I was married our yorkie did this too, we thought it was hilarious...our yorkie didn't have to display this behavior often, cause wasn't that much affection happening in that household, thus the word X-husband...I have no advice, just wanted to chime in on this. |
bailee just does this too,in fact she did it just a minute as my bf was leaving...everytime we kiss she barks and goes crazy and jumps, she has never bit him though...if i were you i would follow chachis advice, that seems like it would work |
Have your BF hold him, play with him and give him treats everytime he comes over. Like when he comes through the door call your his name, make him sit (an easy command) then give him a treat. I'm sure in no time he'll love your new BF. Libbie loves my BF now! :p |
