Thinking of a "sibling" I'm debating getting my dog a playmate....she is 5 years old and has always been the only dog in the house. I recently started a new job and leave her w my sister and her dogs in the evenings for a few hours and she has a blast playing w her dogs.... If I do get another, should I stick with the same breed? Or do you think it matters? And any other advice you can give, or tips would be really appreciated!! |
Go for it. I'd go for a small playmate, Yorkie or another breed. |
I think a sibling is a good idea but I would see how she does first by bringing another dog into your home with her. She may do great at your sister's house but some dogs act different when a new dog is brought into their territory...sometimes is't great at first but once they realize the new dog is staying some will show their attitude, especially if the new dog tries to get close to you. Some dogs do well with others no matter what the situation but since your girls is already 5 and used to being the only one there with you I would test her in different ways to be sure it will be o.k. We just got a sibling for Skootie only he isnt too crazy for her. Layla is a little wildthing and he is quiet. He's warming up to her but its slow going. Layla is a Morkie but she looks more like the Maltese. I think its going to be a good combination once she gets out of the wild puppy stage. All she wants to do is play and he's not interested in that much play. Oh yeah, Skootie is 5 yrs old also, Layla is 11 weeks. There will be an adjustment period but it shouldn't last too long. We are already seeing an improvement and its only been a couple of weeks. Good Luck |
1 Attachment(s) I have 3 yorkies and love watching them interact and snuggle and play. I feel better knowing when I go out they are not alone, so if you can afford to I would definitely recommend a sibling. |
We have a Shih Tzu that is almost three years old. I decided I wanted another as not only a playmate for Leo but another 'kid' for me. :D I think if you have the time, money, energy and love, it's a great idea. I also agree with the poster who suggested seeing how your current dog reacts to a strange dog in his house. Leo is really good with other dogs, so I'm hoping it will be okay. My only worry is that once he realizes the dog isn't leaving, he may get really ticked off. :p |

I think a playmate is a great idea! I live at home still and Jackson gets to play all day with my mom's dog, Carmen! I feel more comfortable leaving the house knowing he's with her. |

We got our 2nd little girl 2 weeks ago. Lexi, our first yorkie is 15 mos old and was always wanting to play. We couldn't spend as much time w/her as we wanted since we both work. Ellie came to us from Chris' Rescue Angels and has really been a true blessing. She and Lexi play so well together and have slept in the same bed since the first day (during the day, at night they both sleep with us of course). I believe the sucess is mostly because they both have wonderful personalities. I'm so glad we made the decision to bring Ellie home. Even more special, I found her through Yorkie Talk! |

Go for it, get a sibling! I think they are happier and healthier and better socialized with more around. I wanted another yorkie BAD, but had to rescue my EX friend's doxie because she had already been thru 2 homes and she played so well with Coco, so I ended up with a doxie sister for my baby. I don't regret it at all though, they sleep together and keep each other company. And Maggie is a doll, she is more playful, so the boys can play with her and leave Coco alone when she doesn't want to play. |
I got a sibling for Cash almost two weeks ago and although Cash is taking his time before letting her be part of the pack, he plays with her so well. He doesn't like sleeping with her yet, but then again, he hasn't slept with another dog in two years. I am looking for a harness for June so that they can take walks together. Apparently, walking together makes them accept each other as part of the pack. Oh, Cash is two years old and a great example for the baby. It is still early days, but I am so glad that I got her. She is a joy to have and she keeps Cash busy. At this very moment, he is laying in his bed with a toy and she is stalking him, jumping on him and trying to win the toy. The best thing is, he lets her think that she is going to win.:D |
Playmate I have little Trevor, a morkie who just turned 1 in April, I fell into getting Harry just Monday, and I was worried.....2 males????Together?????They are best friends, joined at the hip so to speak. Harry is teaching Trevor all kinds of new tricks:eek: |
thanks for the responses!! I'm really considering it, just want to make sure I can dedicate the time to a puppy at the moment. And I'd love to have the peace of mind when leaving her home knowing she has a playmate and not just the tv!! |
