We need help/advice Ok everyone, in a nutshell here is our problem. We have three dogs. A female rat terrier, a male wheaton and of course Gizmo. Phoenix and Gizmo does not get along at all. It's so bad that a couple weeks ago Phoenix attacked Giz and he had to go to the ER and get sedated and stitched up. Idk if it's a male thing or what but both him and Phoenix gets along with Miles. We have to keep them separated and allow playtimes for Giz and Miles and Miles and Phoenix b/c they all can't play together anymore. It's frustrating b/c my fiance and I have been talking about doing something we don't want to do...and that's get rid of all the dogs. We really need help/advice on what else we can do. Has anyone ever used a dog therapist or dog whisperer? We live near Alexandria, VA so any help would be greatly appreciated. |
Generally if you have two males and a female, they are going to fight to claim the female/s. If you don't have these dogs spayed and the female neutered, I'd do so ASAP. You could go on line and either get Cesar's book or one of his video's. You do need to take charge. We see too many dogs in shelters and listed for free simply because most people don't know how to train, so they give them away. |
I am certainly not an authority but a few years ago before we lost our male schnauzer we had a problem too. I had a doxie that was about 12yrs. old and Max was about 2 maybe 3. It is a dominace thing I believe. Muffin would never submit to Max and one morning over food he lifted him completey off the floor and shook him until I though he as dead. I rushed him to the vet and he had to have stitches and his little front leg in a cast. It still didn't stop. You have no problems when the others submit but if they don't even a male will jump on a female. We have had that happen too. Just don't ever leave them alone without supervision. Seperate them when you are gone and when they eat or anything that might cause a flair up. Good luck, hope this helps. Like I said I don't know but I believe thats the problem. |
I'm sorry to hear that. :( Are your pups fixed? If not I would start there and then perhapes find a behaviorist? |

I think everyone has given excellant advice. All of ours are fixed by the time they are old enough to have it done. I guess I was just thinking yours were. That is very important but I could not even think about getting rid of one of them. They are like our kids. After we lost Muffin, Tina decided she was going to stand up to Max. She is not much bigger than our yorkie. She also is a schnauzer but a toy schnauzer. After she was sewn up it taught her to not mess with him. He was really a sweet dog but was just going to show them who was alpha. The vet also advised to seperate them if need be but after that last little episode we never had any more problems. So, if yours have not be altered, please do so and see if that helps. Good luck. |
