what are good treats to use to train with? something small and easy to eat. any suggestions?

We did a tricks training class, and Joey put on too much weight because I had to keep using more tempting treats to keep him interested, so now we train with his regular food. When potty training, plain cheerios are great because they don't ruin appetite for more nutritious food, and I also use green beans for training. Joey loves the freeze-dried liver, but because of the calories I only use that for a special treat, not for actual training.

I'm sure that I will not be the only one that will mention this, but the only "treats" that Harley will eat are Yorkie Yummies! They are great, very small, and as far as I know everyone loves them. I love that they are made with love by a YTer from human grade ingrediants! We also use cheese on occasion, which Harley also loves.

One of the things I learned in obedience is to have a variety of different treats to use. You will quickly learn which ones are higher "value" to your dog. The main one that I use is Bil Jac dog food. You can get it in the freezer department of most grocery stores. I break it apart while still frozen and keep baggies in the freezer. My breeder told me about it - she uses it for shows. She calls it "puppy crack" and the name certainly fits with Sadie. She will do anything for it. For a Yorkie the trick is to use a very small piece. I also reduce her regular food when we are training a lot. She will do anything for her "puppy crack".

I use cherios, fresh diced apples, buddy biscuits and I just ordered some yorkie yummies:)

I've been using Yorkie Yummies also. They are tiny and crunchy so it takes Noelle a little while to finish eating them.:love:

when morgan was a baby i used honey nut cheerios for her too. good think was, i could eat them too. LOL

now morgan has yorkie yummies as treats and these are great for training as well since they are so small

Cheerios are good and quick for trick training. You want something tiny so they don't take forever to chew so they're still concentrated and ready to do the next trick!

Jackson goes nuts for cheese. I just used regular cheese cut up in tiny little pieces.

I've also done those little Bill Jac treats, they're tiny little round ball treats but I don't give as many of those cuz if I remember correctly, they were pretty high in fat and not the best ingredients.

Wellness has good treats too and I break them in smaller pieces. You can get those at Petco or any specialty store such as Pet Valu, etc.

Amelia is a chicken jerky crackhead. I chop it up into smaller pieces. She'll do anything for it and it's low cal.
