Thoughts on Chocolate Yorkies Hello all..... I am new to this forum and have a topic that I would like to get your thoughts on..... Chocolate Yorkshire Terriers. That's all I'll say.... I fell in love with them and then later found out that they were not permitted in the show ring..... So... thoughts either way and any information would also be appreciated! |
Chocholate Yorkies have a genetic defect having to do with pigmitation. some back yard breeders or Mills would say they are rare and charge a lot more for these pups or most are euthanized. These yorkies would make fine pets but should not breed. |
I must be hungry or very tired because I thought you meant there were chocolate candy yorkies we could buy like chocolate candy bunnies at Easter. :animal36 |
I think they are cute and wouldnt mind having one. I dont think they should be bred or sold as rare for outrageous prices since it is a fault |

I had a picture of one on my bulletin board at work long before I got Buddy. He was the most beautiful dog I ever saw, IMO. Brown nose and all. I would love to own one. I agree, they should not be breed since the colors of a Yorkie are blue/gold, blue/tan, black/gold or black/tan. |
I agree with the other posters, they make cute pets, but should not be purposefully bred for money. I don't believe in breeding a fault, and trying to market it as "rare" or special. These breeders often overlook other traits, and just breed for the fault, which can cause other concerns as well. The name chocolate is marketing genius, the other name for these dogs is "liver colored", not nearly as tempting. |

My Izzie is a "chocolate" yorkie , she is beautiful and the sweetest little one in the bunch...And sometimes I could 'eat' her up she's so cute... But, it's what's inside that counts ! :dogprints:dogprints |
This is what the YTCA has to say about chocolates: An Important Note About Color in Yorkshire Terriers By Gale Thompson The most distinctive characteristic of an adult Yorkshire Terrier is its long blue and tan silk coat. A puppy is born black and tan, but the only recognized colors for adults when registering with AKC are blue and gold, blue and tan, black and gold, or black and tan. The AKC Breed Standard and YTCA Code of Ethics do not recognize any other color dogs than noted above. This includes all gold, born blue, liver (also known as red or chocolate), and parti-colors. One of the reasons for avoiding breeding "off-colored" Yorkies is because it could be a genetic defect that may affect the dog's health. Some health problems can include, but aren't limited to, severe skin problems, allergies, total hair loss and in some cases long-term illness and/or death. A responsible breeder will not intentionally breed for undesirable traits. On very rare occasions, a breeder will have a puppy born with a color anomaly. That puppy should undergo careful health screenings before being placed in a spay/neuter (non breeding) home. A breeder should certainly never promote these deviations as being desirable or rare. There are many issues that potential Yorkie owners need to study before purchasing their dog. We hope you will read the helpful information at this web site and make an informed decision. I've never seen a chocolate Yorkie in real life ! However i've seen plenty of Chi's this color. Also, in the Lab breed ! |

I have a cute little chocolate yorkie and couldn't love him anymore. Cooper has this way of cocking his head sideways when I talk to him and with that adorable little angel face of his it just melts my heart and makes me smile every time. |
1 Attachment(s) My Gizmo is a chocolate and he's soooooo adorable I could just eat him lol. To be honest I knew nothing about yorkies when I got him except that they're beautiful dogs. The breeder didn't make a big deal about his color she was more concerened about getting rid of him because he was too big and she was afraid he could hurt the other little ones so I got him on rebate lol. Here is is at 10 weeks he's now just a little over 4 months. |
