Does your Yorkie swim? When I first got Tate I noticed he had webbed feet. We went rafting on a river in Washington State with two miniature poodles. Of course, the poodles could swim. As soon as Tate hit the water he sank to the bottom. I had to rescue my poor baby. That was when he was about 10 months old. Last month we were at the dog park and Tate was so adamant about stealing a toy from a Labrador that he jumped in the water, mimicked the dogs movements, swam out and stole the labs frisbee! I was dumbstruck! Tate can swim and not only to get by. He swims well! Does anyone know if Yorkies traditionally have webbed feet? I have heard some can swim and some can't. Would love to hear other people's stories about their swimming or non-swimming Yorkie's. |
I haven't tried it yet. i went swimming yesterday at my grandma's house and was going to try bringing molly in to see how she would do but then i got in and decided it was still too cold. even though its so damn hot outside. i will probably try nxt month. |
i took cleo swimming for the first time sunday. the water was still kind of cold so she didn't stay in. i just held her until i got deep enough and then let her go. she swam to the steps and got out, but was very willing to do it again. we did it twice and then she sunbathed to dry. my big dog loves the pool, so i hope that she will be a swimmer also. |
I don't know... This will be Fancy's first summer, I plan on taking her though when we go swimming somewhere - after the weather warms up.;) I hope she will like it. |
Both my guys can swim. We visit my in-laws' home on the lake every summer - and we throw the ball into the water - Wylie flies into the water, swims out to fetch - he LOVES to swim in the lake. Marcel fetches Wylie. Marcel can swim just fine - but even a small wake on the lake can go over his head (he's 3 lbs). We have a pool at home, and they don't really like it as much - probably the smell/chemicals. :) |
Last month was the first time Pasquale went into the water. He doesnt really "swim"...its more of ...jump jump jump. He stays near the beach in the shallow part and just jumps around and gets wet LoL  |
My dream is to walk on the beach with Buddy and let him play in the surf. All we have available to us is the dirty Hudson River and that ain't happening. I think about it all the time. I wish I were closer to the ocean and a beach. Yorkies have webbed feet? I don't think Buddy does, I don't remember seeing that on him:confused: |
Hi Tate is so cute. I have 3 Yorkies and they all swim in my pool. I have life jackets for them Check out my pics and you'll see them |
I cant wait until it gets warmer to try Tia in the water. She has been by the sea but didnt brave it, although I was quite worried too.I think Ill probably get one of those kids paddling pools and try her in the garden first. Love the life jackets Im wondering if they sell them here in the uk. |

Tate's parens were both really large Yorkies but who knows exactly who their parents were before them? He has a gimpy toe too so who know's.. Tate's just cute and defective... and he can swim.. Maybe he's part Labrador? (Labradorkie?) |
Both mine love to swim. We usually have life jackets on them when we take them out in the water with us. The first time Hot Rod was in the water he splashed water everywhere. After the initial shock he did well and even jumped in on his own! Maggie loved the water! Lil stinkers loves to be in the hot tub with us. |

Not swimming weather for my little girl yet. Have a friend who has a yorkie. Said she'd swim all the way across the lake if she'd let her. She keeps her on a leash so she can have fun & friend has control over her. |
i took molly swimming yesterday but i don't think she really enjoyed it lol. the water was really cold...so i just held her and then let her go to see if she would swim and she did. she wasn't going to the stairs though she kept trying to get out from the side. so when the water warms up i think she will like it better. |
I'm really excited to take Jackson swimming this summer! I think he will REALLY like it. My grandma lives right on the Chesapeake Bay with a beach behind her so I'm anxious to take Jackson over there. And my dad has a pool at his house! |
OMG I'm glad you posted this I have a funny story.. Teddy does not have webbed feet however, we were at my grandma's some day last week out walking (it was really nice out) and my grandma has a pond behind her house with all these geese and Teddy decides to chase the geese right into the water! my jaw dropped I think. Never in a million years did I think he was going to jump right in.. he swam fine.. right back to shore lol.. I don't think he'll do it again ahaha. |
This will be Lucas' first summer, and we have a condo out in BC with a lake, so we shall see! :p If he has the same feelings about the lake as he does about his bath, it will be a pretty dry summer for him I think. Lol.:D |
Tobie is a fish, he loves loves the water just not bath water. He likes to swim in the river at my parents ranch and in the swimming pool. But dont worry, he always wears a life jacket and someone is with him at all times when he goes swimming. |
Bruce loves loves to swim! We live near many lakes and often it is hard to keep him out of the water on walks. He will jump into any pool if it is near and I regularly take him to an indoor heated dog pool. I do however make him wear a life jacket because I am afraid he could tire out or a current could sweep him up, etc. The first time he swam he just jumped into a pool while at a friends barbecue I was so panicked I jumped in after him, but it turned out he was a natural. |
does your yorkie swim Yes, Bella loves the water and she does swim well, we went swimming the other day we put her inbetween us and she went on her own. Jack on the other hand does not know how this works. I am getting them life jackets.(matching) and play toys. Cheryl/jack/bella |
My little Burke can swim but wont jump in on his own, he tends to hang out on the shore when I go swimming. He will go in up to his chest, swim a little then go back to shore. I wonder since my sister got a new lab puppy that Burke is in love with, if he'll try to follow her more into the water this year. I'm hoping he'll become a stronger swimmer for it. Though I am worried about the active lab puppy rough housing too much in the water! Burke has webbed feet, but isnt a strong swimmer. When he does swim his butt sinks some so he wears a lifejacket when we go on the boat. |
water is for drinking Both Scooby and Choco can swim but do not like water. We probably should not have introduced them to swimming at ocean, where the waves while small did make it more challenging for them. They head for shore immediately. One evening wife brought Choco to the pool, to greet me. I was on other side and lights off. Choco did not notice the water and tried to run across. Well once in the water he swam quite quickly across. Got out, shaked then gave me the typical elated greeting. They both go bonkers after bath trying to dry themselves, rubbing against everything, even though we do try and dry them mostly beforing releasing them. Still they show their frustration / irritation after each bathing, even if just their feet. Wish the critters like water more, especially for the bathing part. |
Funny....Harley on New Years Day 2007 we had my BFF coming from Laurel and I decided we'd take them and Harley to the park with the carousel and a POND with I guess 30 ducks/geese. He had just had a bath 1 he before and it had to be 15 degrees or least it felt like it. I walked across the bridge to show my dtr the geese and my husband got the brilliant idea to take harley off leash a bit. I was taking a pic of my dtr when I hear splash. I said a bad word and he was doing his best to get them. Wethought it was funny he dove in 3 or 4 more times after that. He never even thought I guess how cold that water was!!!!! |
Hehe, Cash absolutely loves to swim. He always swims at my parents' house. I limit his swimming session though, because he gets so excited that he hyperventilates. My siblings loves to toss the ball into the pool and have Cash bring it back to them. I get paranoid though, partly because of the hyperventilation thing and partly because Cash dives in so deep that the water covers his whole body, including his face. If the ball sinks, he will try to dive (while in the water) to get it and he won't get out of the pool until he gets it. He doesn't have a lifejacket, but he isn't allowed to swim unattended and I am very strict with my siblings when they are playing with him. If he starts shaking or even slightly choking, the games are over. I am happy that he swims and he really enjoys it, but like all things with Cash, I have to calm him down a bit and really control what he is doing. Otherwise he would swim all day every day! Ps. After he started swimming, he seems to enjoy his baths more than he did before. He also swims in rivers and the ocean. He is a natural - he swims better than me and I grew up with a pool and water-loving parents!:D |
