OMG, Now what are we supposed to do I just came across this article about flea and tick medications.....I have Milo on Frontline Plus but after reading this I don't know what to do, we live in an area where it is a must for your dog. Increased Scrutiny of Flea and Tick Control Products for Pets | Pesticides | US EPA |
Do Natural Remedies... I haven't started dealing w/that issue, yet, as I've not seen any fleas... However, when the need arises, I will, totally, only use natural flea remedies...I use to use borax in my carpet, for years and years, and it's very very effective, albeit, I didn't have a toy, and haven't read up on it w/these little hoover dogs...But I'm sure you can look into natural remedies and find a good one...I'll be doing that very very soon, myself...In fact, share w/us any information you may get on this subject....Have a great day, Carol! Hi Maggie, I am going to be calling my Vet later on today to see what they suggest. Here in NJ we have a very big deer tick problem. Our new Vet is not pro shot and I trust they will tell us what will be best to use for Milo as soon as I speak with them I will post back on what they advise me to do. Cheryl Quote:

I heard something about this on the radio. It has more to do with the products solely sold in pet stores as opposed to those usually sold by vet, I think. You may be able to contact the FDA or EPA and ask how many complaints there are about Frontline. Quite a few I'm sure but probably much less than the cheaper products. |
In the summer here it's a must. Fleas and especially ticks are awful. I use a brewers yeast and garlic tablet once a day all year long. after the weather cools off that's all I use. It's great as a flea repelant and it helps keep their coat shiny. I tried a store brand ONCE. It made her sick. |

I just emailed my Vets office, asking their advice. I felt since this was a non emergency (he already got it this month and is not due to get another treatment for several weeks), email was the way to got. Hopefully they will get back to me today if not by tomorrow regarding this. I will keep everyone updated. Cheryl |
That study was specifically on flea meds purchased over the counter such as Hartz products. |

The potential for a reaction to ANY product is always possible...but you have to take into consideration how many animals it affects. Not negligating how the pet owner whose animal has a reaction...of course, that's devastating, but do the majority of animals suffer from reactions? Hartz products routinely cause reactions.... Another suggestion...don't apply the full dosage on your pet. I apply 1/2 the dose to mine...they don't weigh any where close to the 22 pound limit and the product still works fine. |
I can't imagine not using Frontline Plus. I hate putting this on Buddy but the thought of fleas or ticks walking in my house or in my bed is enough to make me continue using it. My vet told me not to worry. I will check with him again next month for Buddy's yearly. I also only use about 2/3 of the vial and go up to 6weeks before reapplying without any problem. I am going to try for 7 weeks this summer and see. I also stop in Oct and start up again the following April with no problem. I know it's scary but both you and your dog need some protection and natural remedies don't do it for us. |

Is that a prescription? What is in it? |
It is the once a month version of CapStar. CapStar is a very fast acting pill but only lasts 24 hours. The Comfortis is a pill the dog takes once month. I am not sure what is in it, but your vet would know. You have to buy it from a vet. This stuff works!!! I have never seen any ill side effects. |

Thank you. I will check on it. |
I was just on Az craigslist and there was a site someone recommeded for fleas/ticks....I wrote it down, but didn't check it out yet (I wanted to look on YT first) The first topic I read was yours, how weird !!! Anyway, the site is: Orange Based Natural Green Products for Dogs and Environment I'm going to look it up now! I hope it's natural and good.....:animal36 |

I think it's just for fleas...oops |
i use advantage multi from the vet. it covers everything including mosquitos. for the naturall aproach, which i had to do for awhile, we use garlic tablets and ester c (vitamin c, but easier on the tummy). supposedly the fleas dont like the acidity. |

I love my new Vet Well, the Vet just called me back from my email earlier today. She said that the reports with frontline have been for skin irritant not the same as the others listed. She said if i want to I can split it up in two weeks as long as I keep the remaining amount in an airtight container. She said she had all her animals on the frontline, and the one to stay away from is Promeris (not sure of my spelling). Just wanted to share this with everyone. |
Why put harmful chemical's on or in the pet when all natural is safer and works even better. Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia - Ticks, fleas, bees, flies, snakes and other gremlins! And how to deal with them! |

Thank you for this update. I can't imagine not using Frontline. If it works don't fix it ,is my thoughts. Trying things that are different usually only brings you back to where you started. |

And how to deal with them![/QUOTE While I would love to go the Natural root, I do with all other things, we have a very big deer population in NJ and Lyme is all over the place. The frontline provides protection in the event of a tick bite. Having seen what lymes can to to both humans and animals I feel it would be irresponsible of me not to use the best defense I can. I made the choice not to give him the Lymes shot anymore on the advice of my Vet, so I trust them when they say use the frontline. |
[quote=cdawnfine;2588254] Quote:
You said your vet advised against giving him the Lymes disease shot. Did he say why? |
He said that unless he was out in the woods for a good portion of the time there was no need, and that he did not give it to his own dog. |
I use Comfortis for both my dogs!! I LOVE IT!! I have been using it for almost a year now and no problems.. Mitzy has flea allergies and on frontline was still getting fleas (we live in south georgia so fleas are bad). Our vet had us put on Comfortis and no problems since!! :D We also tried natural rememdies and I can tell you if you live in an area with alot of fleas and ticks they don't help much. I was doing brewers yeast tablets AND garlic and nothing helped. Its supposed to tast nasty to the fleas but honestly it did nothing to help my poor baby :( |
i haven't used flea and tick meds on morgan for over a year now. but when i did she was getting 1/2 of a frontline plus. |
