They play so rough! Does anyone else worry about how rough their dogs play? Out of my parents 2 chihuahuas and my Cocker Spaniel, Jasmine, my Rat Terrier, is the only one who will play with Tobie because he's so hyper (and she's 15 years old!). He will come up behind them and bite the back of their legs and bite at their ears. A lot of times, she ignores him (even when he's hanging on to her dog tag. lol.) but she also plays with him a lot and it seems so rough! She'll pin him down by his neck and it scares me to death! I always stop that but as soon as she lets him go, he's up and biting the back of her legs again. He's way more rough than her but because she's bigger it scares me. Should I be worried about how they play? Do you think it just seems more rough than it actually is? |
Yeah, Jackson will play pretty rough with my moms cocker spaniel/poodle, Carmen as well as my dad's jack russell mix. And you will definitely know if it's gotten out of hand, I think... Sometimes the noises Jackson & Carmen make, you really would think they were killing each other. But you just have to pay attention to their body language. When Jackson and Carmen are playing making awful growing type noises, both their tails are always happily wagging, no hair is standing up on their back, ears are usually back and calm. When it gets too rough, you will know! |
I think as a rule of thumb, you should stop any humping, and prolonged pinning (short pin is okay). If a dog gets humped or pinned too long, it may get "defensively aggressive", and it also encourages other dogs to gang up on the bottom dog. |
I worry too when mine play rough. Everynow and then one of them will let out a yelp. Thats when I step in. |
I dont worry too much... i can tell by the noises they make if they are getting too rough. Then the play stops:) |
Lexi is the mini schnauzer we bought after Mandy passed away. A vet down in East Texas raises and shows them. He had planned on keeping Lexi to show and then decided to sell her at 5mo. old. We bought her and she was use to being around smaller dogs because he also has a pet spa etc. Well, sometimes she and Kayla will play rough. Lexi out weighs Kayla by far but I tell her no bite and she is real good to mind. I am glad that Kayla has gained weight because even at 8lbs. she is still little. I would worry about a real little yorkie because I do her, but at least she is pretty stockie. She is a little porker and loves to eat. It always scares me when they grab around the neck but I think every dog is different and I would be concerned if one seemed aggressive. If Lexi ever does seem to be getting that way I would in no way leave Kayla out if we were gone. I would put her in her kennel if there was no supervision. |
It's definitely never aggressive when they play, I'm just afraid that he's going to get hurt accidentally. I do hear the occasional yelp but it's usually her yelping! If I stop them, she walks away and he comes back for more. I guess if he was getting hurt then he would stop but then again he's pretty stubborn. lol. |
I worry about the same thing, Harley is 4 months old and Sam 11 months old. Harley is way more aggressive than Sam and always goes for the sensative spots on Sam. I break them up all the time, he is trying for alpha dog and we still trying to teach him the humans hold that position. I feel bad for Sam because he has a less dominate personality |
i have 3 dogs with very different weights ( 3.7 lbs, 38lbs, and 75lbs.) and they all play together. The big dogs will get on their backs and let Cleo "pin" them. Cleo gets very growly sometimes, but it is all noise. They get pretty rough, but it seems they know one anothers limits and if it gets passed that someone "speaks up" |
