Quick Benadryl dosage question! I have the Children's Dye-free liquid Benadryl, and I'm confused about the dosage. I know I should give him 1ml per pound (he's 6.9lbs, so I'd give him 7ml). Well, I have a syringe from the vet from a previous medication, and I also have the little measuring cup that came with the Benadryl. However, 7ml on the measuring cup is WAYYYYY more than 7ml in the syringe! Or is my syringe not in millileters...maybe it's in mg? Ugh, I can't tell...it's worn off lol. If it helps, I used the syringe previously to give him liquid metronidazole, and I gave him 3ml (or at least I thought it was ml). Please help...I don't want to overdose him! Thanks! |
Make it easy on yourself. His dose is about 1/2 teaspoon or slightly more. :) That was the vet-calculated dose for Ellie when she was 6-6.8 pounds...1/2 teaspoon. |

The formula for figuring out the dosage for Childrens Liquid Benedry is: Your dogs body weight times 5 divided by 12.5 = dose in cc/ml To figure out your dogs body weight you have to convert ounces to pounds... EX: a dog that weighs 4 pounds 10 ounces would weigh 4.625 pounds you must take the 10 ounces and divide by 16 then add the 4 pounds... 10 divided by 16 = .625 + 4 =4.625 4.625 X 5 divided by 12.5 =1.85 cc/ml Since the info is worn off your syringe...I'd either go by the vet's and get another or the drugstore sells liquid medicine dispensing spoons with the milligrams listed. |
You're welcome. :) I hate the mls to mgs to tsps. thing. I just tell the vet that I don't trust Ellie's health to my math skills and I think she should figure it. ;) |
Okay, I'm terrible at this. The closest dose would be 1/2 teaspoon but not slightly more...it looks like if anything slightly less but that's what I've always been told to give. That dose certainly won't hurt. I think there must be different dosing methods used (not necessarily all right) because 7 ml would be over 1 teaspoon which is way too much. Is that the dose your vet said to give? |
