Yorkie Growth For those of you who remember, how long did it take for your baby to be full grown? I can't seem to remember.:) |
Two years, especially for females. Each is different and grows at its own rate. This is reason we must be sure and wait till they are two. |
With toy breeds usually 6 mos. I've never had one grow up to 2 years. Even my outside dogs were done growing by a year. They may grow 1/2 lbs after 6 mos or somewhere in there. I've only had one that kept growing, and that was my yorkie, and my son says she's a freak of nature. She was supposed to have been around 4 lbs. My biewer is now 10 mos. she hasn't gained any weight for over 3 mos now |
trixie hasnt gain an onz since her sixth month. She does eat more now. |
My Suzi has not gained any weight past 10months of age... I pushed weight on her because I thought she looked a little too thin at 6months. SHe looks much healthier now. I do not have a scale, so it is strictly by looking at her that I can tell. Even family members can see a noticable difference in her apperarance and energy level. |
I have seen my a few of my own girls gain up to an extra pound after 1.5 years of age. Infact I have had one of the top people in yorkies state to me that some yorkies can infact still grow up to 2 years of age. She also speaks at Specialty shows. She knows what she is talking about. I am not saying all yorkies will continue to grow, but it is not unlikely. Females, can gain more weight after having a litter or after being spayed. There are some lines that grow slow and will take up to 2 to finish growing and then there are some lines that grow fast and level out at 6 -10 months of age. It just depends. One really cannot be 100% sure until they are 2. I have seen this with my own dogs. It is a good thing that some have continued to grow and some I am glad they quit growing early. And then I have one of my own males I wish and hope he will grow more. He is one now. You just do not know forsure. Each is an individual. |
Vets will tell you that being spayed does not make a dog gain weight. Just like a person, only if you stop exercising will you gain. None of the dogs I've ever had(and they've all be spayed/neutered, have gained anymore weight after being fixed. That's another myth actually.;) Myth 1: If I get my pet spayed or neutered, he or she will get fat and lazy. As if most dogs and cats didn't already lie around the house all day anyway... In any case, this myth about spaying and neutering pets might be true if you overfeed your pet and don't exercise him enough, but that's hardly the fault of the procedure, now is it? |
