Stair Phobia :animal36My Maggie May won't go down any stairs she is now 11 months. She will go up but never down. We tried coaxing her with treats and as much as she loves her treats she still won't go down. We had her since 12 weeks old and nothing happened to traumatize her. Anyone have a suggestion? My boy had a stair phobia after he fell down the stairs and hurt his leg......he wouldn't go up or down for many months after......but then 4 months after I got another yorkie the same age and she would go up and down.......it was not long after that he started to chase her up and down......I was so happy.....not sure if my story will help maybe if you have a friend bring over a dog who will go up and down readily that may help...... |
My Daisy Mae will only go up stairs too. If I was that little, I would be afraid of heights too!;) I wouldn't worry too much. They may grow out of it, maybe not. ~Kathy:animal-pa |
Hi Thank you for the suggestion I have a friend coming over with her pooch for a play day. Hope it works Ginette |
Hi Kathy Thank god she's not the only one for a while I thought she was neurotic I have 2 cats and she is beginning to show signs of being more feline than canine. I found her on my kitchen table and takes naps on a kitchen chair lol |
I have a phobia yorkie too....he wont go thru the doggie door, (one of 7) and he wont cross the hard wood floors, he skirts around it, no matter if his nails are just cut or not. Hes a odd little guy.......and hes 2.5 yrs. good luck I hope yours grow out of it. |
I have five yorkies, and just one of them (Phantom) refuses to do the stairs. He wouldn't go up or down, until recently (about a month or so ago) he started going up by himself, but he just won't go down. The others race up and down, and try to coax him, but he just won't do it. He's 18 months old now, and he's never fallen or had any trauma. He's just my big baby, and that's okay with me. I thought for sure that eventually he would just do it and follow the others (my girls have been doing the stairs since they were about 8-10 weeks old!). They even "tease" him by taking his toys and dropping them down one stair at a time, but he just goes crazy and barks for me to go and get his toys for him! |
we started Teddy off with 2 stairs and a treat, three stairs, etc. then he got used to it and now he does stairs frequently only when my hands are full but he still doesn't like them. |
My Laci just started to go down , she goes up but barks when she gets to the top. I got her to come down by saying you wanna go outside.. come on momma is going bye bye, she figured it out.... It was a game for a couple weeks she would just keep going up and barking so I would go get her... |
Gunnar is 8 months. He will go up the stairs but not down. I'm glad because we have 7 stairs up/down to the front door. When I go out, I know that he will stay on the porch and not run down the stairs to the street. I think he will eventually brave the stairs as he gets older. Donna |
How big is she? The stairs must be frightening to her. I would coax her with treats |
Sam is 4yrs old and he won't even attempt to go up or down the stairs. |

She is 6 pounds she has just decided I guess that going down is just not for her lol |
Piper will be a year old in a couple weeks. She weighs about 6lbs. and she doesn't go up or down stairs. She also doesn't jump on and off furniture. When she was 7 months old we found out she had Legg Perthes Disease so I don't know if she had been in pain all those months and that's why she never tried stairs and jumping on and off things. She had her surgery 4 months ago and she is walking and running fine but she still has no desire to do stairs and jump on and off things. |
