Swimming I know yorkies can swim, but I was wondering what is the best way to introduce them to it and get them to like it? I don't have a pool, but my parents' house does. I was thinking by the summer, when Bailey will be about 6-7 months, it would be nice to get her to swim. My parents have a golden retriever mix who has never gone anywhere near the water, and I don't want Bailey to be the same way. |
This is a good question!! I was thinking about buying a little plastic kiddie pool, and see how she does with that. Then move on to the big pool. |
My parent's have a pool so I'm going to try to get Addie in it this summer. My mom has a Lhaso Apso and he hates the water, I'm hoping Addie won't be the same way. |
I was thinking about filling up the bath tub and see if Duke can swim in there first before the pool? He gets his baths in there and that's not his favorite thing to do so maybe if he likes to swim in there, it'll help with the baths too hmmm.... |
At 6 - 7 months...they are still really small...the pool temperature needs to be really high or they are susceptible to hypothermia. Mine love to ride their boogie boards in the pool, but they aren't really keen on swimming in it. I will dip them in to cool them off when it's really hot outside. Reggie is my true water dog...he adores playing in the water hose. |

Try the bath tub at first and see how your baby does in that! |
My last yorkie loved the water...we had those rafts that have a full mesh center with the inflatable sides..They sell them in Walgreens/CVS/EVERYWHERE. When the dog is on it will it will only sink so far (usually up to her chest) and she loved walking around in it, it was her own floating little pool. We loved it too b/c we would lay on our raft and float and she would stand in hers and be one big floating family....HA I can't wait to get DUDLEY on it this yr. He's 9mo, so it's gonna be fun. GOOD LUCK |
Our yorkies will probably never swim, they HATE the water. I hope yours enjoys swimming! Make sure you keep an careful eye out of course :) |
Jackson's currently 6 months old so when my dad opens his pool next month, he'll be 7 months. He's 13 pounds and I THINK he will love the water! But who knows. I'm anxious to find out. |
just be very careful. Their hair weights them down and every year we see heartbreaking threads on here where yorkies have drowned in pools. in fact, there is one one here now that just happened. |
The thing is...with a backyard pool...if they get to love swimming in it and start to jump in on their own...there had better ALWAYS be a human around to get them back out. :( |
Mine don't swim either but they do like to ride a raft (with me holding them on) My golden ret. have their own kiddie pool. Jazzy likes to lay in it and Jeter likes to just walk through it. |
