Is this safe? Do you think it'll be okay to get Teddy neutered at the ASPCA? They said they do small dogs all the time and he is around 8 lbs..has anyone done it? |
I was afraid to do Coco at the humane society, but she was only 4lbs at the time. I went with her vet even though it was expensive. |
What is their anesthetic protocol like? |
Hummmm -- I wouldn't feel comfortable with anyone performing surgery on my guys except my regular vets. Unless, that is, I had a life threatening emergency and didn't have access to my dear Dr. Amy. |

Some SPCA places have local vets come in on a rotation schedule to make it more affordable. It could be that kind of set up; you could ask if a local vet comes in to do the procedure. |

It is best to place an IV before surgery. It should be done on a heated surface. Preop blood work should be done. Line sugeries aren't as safe. They need to do one at a time. They need to take their time and not rush through to get the other animals done. In general, I would not go to a place like that unless they were exceptionally careful and there was no way I could afford my regular vet. |

I would also have to agree that blood work should be done and is always a good idea to have done. This is usually done in addition to the surgery cost. |
My sister had her Boggle (Beagle/Boston Terrier mix) spayed at the ASPCA when she was 6 months old and everything went perfect. Granted, Roxy was probably bigger then Teddy, but it still went well... |
Low cost or free spay-neuter programs in U.S.: New York spaying neutering listings - Love That Cat Store Here is a list of all the programs in the state of New York. I looked over it pretty quickly but there are some that have certificate programs. There are plenty of grant programs out there that enable good vets to participate in these types of programs. Do your research and make a wise choice. |
Max was neutered at the aspca and he did great! He was not even 3 pounds yet |
thank you everyone!! |

I had my first dog neutered by the humane society in Hawaii, and they did it completely 100% for free. They did a wonderful job. He had no complications. Edited to add: A friend of mine used to work there and she told me that the vet's at the humane society do so many neutering/spaying a day they rarely have any complications because they're so well seasoned at it, much more than a private practice. |
I think it would probably be fine as long as they answered any and all questions you may have about the procedure! I really only feel comfortable using the vet I'm used to for anything surgical, but that's just me and I'm way overly paranoid! I know the ASPCA does many spays and spays on young puppies that are small also so I'd assume they'd be good at it. I think the thing that puts me more at ease than even who does the actual procedure, is to pay for all the EKG and pre blood work. It really makes me feel better to know that there are no underlying issues before they're put under for surgery. Do they offer that at the ASPCA? |
