Very large hawk
 

My neighbor called this afternoon and said to get Scooter inside because there has been a very large hawk hanging around. Scooter was already inside and when I looked outside I saw the hawk sitting on the fence watching the house. He is very big.:2omg: Now I'm afraid to let Scoot out anymore and I don't know how this is going to work because he and Bitsy spend several hours a day just running around and having a good time out in the yard. I've read of hawks, eagles and owls taking small dogs and I would die if anything happened to him. Darn stupid hawk is making our lives very difficult. Has anyone had experience with large birds of prey? Scooter and Bitsy spent hours just staring out the sliding door to the yard. I wonder if I keep him in for a few days or if I go outside with him maybe the hawk will move on to another area. Hate that hawk.:mad:

- buy an air horn
- warn the neighbors
- bubye birds
- repeat if needed

what would a air horn do...what is it

There's a lot of different threads on here regarding hawks, so if you do a search you can find different advice! One thing I think is to hang shiny objects from trees, it's supposed to deter the birds. Also, would it be possible to build a little kennel outside w/ a roof that they can run around in? We hate hawks too!!!

I worry about my girls too! The air horn sounds like a good idea! :thumbup:

:(Well, sice I saw this thread I thought I would share my scary story.

My neighbor and I are always outside letting our puppies play in the front yard. We have seen many hawks, sometimes there are 8-10, flying around, but always stay very close to our puppies and watching the sky. They usually dont come down close, but thought if they were tempted enought they would. Both of our husbands thought the hawk would never come to close while "people" are out there. We argued that..lol

We had given them treats and Bella being so picky, she of course didnt eat hers. It was in the yard about 10 feet from where we were standing. As always we are constantly looking above our heads to see if the hawks are checking us out, and there was. We grabbed our babies up....He got closer and closer and was diving down right us. I was so feraked out I turned my back and tucked Bella in my chest and put my head down and and did the whole...."WTH" thing. When I looked back, it was leaving with the treat that was in the yard:eek: I thought he was going to try and take my baby out of my arms...:(

So not only did we prove the husbands wrong:D, but now we are terrified to let our babies play outside.....

They are very sneaky, and you have to watch for them constantly

Last night when I took Amelia out there were 3 huge ones circling our yard and one looked to be setting up to make a run at us. It did but the wind picked up and knocked it out of alignment. Thank God.

It isn't so bad when the kids are out. Too much confusion for the birds but when we go out in the evenings. There they are....

Another thing you can do is keep birdfeeders out of your yard and put a plastic owl statue out but move it around daily. Moving it around will make appear to be more life like and not just something the hawk gets used to seeing in the same place like a piece of furniture. If you have persistant problems don't try to harm the hawk because it is a federal offence, instead call your local fish and wildlife office. They may be able to do something or give you more advice. Good luck, I know it's scarey and I watch the sky when I take Roxie out to the bike path.

I posted a thread here last week about the one who tried to get Laddy. It was a very terrifying experience. I now have a large xpen with extra panels and a cover over it for him. It was a little pricey for everything but I am not taking any chances and he also loves being outside.

Glad you warned about the Hawks, I wouldn't put an Owl form out there I think it attracts them. My daughter has a tiny chichuhua, had her out at night on a retractable leash. She heard something behind her and when she looked around the owl was on her dog. The owl tried to pick up the dog but it's wing scrapped the ground and dropped the dog and flew off. My daughter scooped up the dog ran in the house and discovered the dog was full of blood on her neck and back, probably from the talons. They took her to emergency vet care and she is fine now. They live in West Chicago and it is woodsy out there, They had a fake Owl on their roof, I think it attracts them When I was there babysitting, I had J-LO out on her leash and I had chills walking her I felt something watching me. I scooped her up and hurried to the front of the house and when I turned around I saw a large brown wing turn the side of the house, it had been hiding in the trees and shrubs along side of their property line. J-LO is now litter trained I think I'll tell her about an air horn when she takes her out for a walk. Coyotes are also a menace out there also. I don't a fence will deter them much . We have to watch out for hawks here also, have had them sit on the fence and watch the dogs..Got the dogs inside. I was telling my vet about it and he said to be very careful when taking them outside because a hawk will scoop a yorkie right up..

I lost a pommy to a hawk. It took her in the alley behind our house and tore her to shreds. The breeder I got chloe from, said he was out walking all the dogs on leashes and they came down and grab one of his babies..He swung at it and it dropped the baby. The baby was okay. It scares me to death!!!
We were at my mother-in-laws when I first got Chloe. I was in her back yard walking her and saw a hawk. I went inside, I'm not chancing anything!!

I'm already scared to death of all of these hawk and owl storied that I hear. It's very frightening to have to be on the lookout constantly for these predators.

I'm not certain how well this works but a breeder I was talking to who lives out in Idaho said that she puts lots of flags in her back and front yard. She seems to think this scares the hawks and owls away.

Hawks aren't afraid of much. We live out in the country and I've watched hawks dive on cats that are out hunting mice. I've seen smaller birds gang up on a hawk or crow, repeatedly diving on it to chase it away from the trees, but we've also watched the hawk flip over and shred a bird that was attacking it. Last year several geese were walking around the back of the pond and a hawk landed 50ft away. It did a goofy, hopping walk through the grass toward the geese and they left.

I've gone through the web looking at all kinds of opinions on this, some stating that a hawk will not go after anything that it can't carry away, but out here there are rabbits that are bigger than Reesie and a hawk has no trouble with these things.

Keep your little ones on a short leash if you have hawks or owls around, and never leave them outside alone. Best thing would be to treat them like they're one of your kids.
