Is Anyone a Professional Dog Trainer? I've been thinking about doing this. It's something I think I would enjoy but would only do it very part time. I'm just wondering if anyone else is a trainer and if they have any insight/advice for me? |
Great question! I was considering this option for my career as well. I'd love to have my own facility one day! I don't even know where to begin though, honestly. I've seen ABC College (Animal Behavior College) but don't know anyone who's used it. I believe it's an online college so I don't know how good it is or how much LIVE dog training you get to do. |

Me too! I would love to be a trainer! |
I wish someone had more info! My dream would be to own my own business... I'm currently in community college completely UNSURE of what I want to do with my life & career. I know I still have time to think. I'm so unmotivated in school, lol. I feel like I'd actually be really motivated and interested in learning about dog psychology and training. It's something I'd truly enjoy so I've been thinking a lot about it. Opening a small place and maybe having dog day care and boarding, along with training. I'm also into pictures and photography, so if I could also have a tiny studio set up in the same place to take pictures of peoples dogs, that would be awesome! I've had all sorts of ideas. |
No insight or advice whatsoever, but I would love to do this too. If I could do anything, I would become another Victoria Stilwell, minus the awful haircut. :) It's funny how life works. In 2000 my boyfriend and I got out of NY because of the whole y2k thing, and went to the Florida Keys. I went swimming with some dolphins in Key Largo. It just blew me away. I got really interested in dolphins, which led me to Karen Pryor and the work she did with dolphins in the 70s, which got me really interested in animal training. Thor at that point was still this annoying little dog called "Teacup" that my coworker brought in sometimes. One day I decided to start trying some of these techniques I kept reading about with the annoying little dog. And that brought me to my beloved Thor, who brings me pure joy every single day. I originally sort of dreamed of being a dolphin trainer, and I still think that could be cool, but you get paid NOTHING since it's such a popular field. I would love to be a dog trainer, or study parrot intelligence. |
Is there any kind of licensing or certification? Just curious. |

I know at Petsmart, you don't need any certification or anything that I know of. But it definitely gives you more reputability. |
There is a famous training school in California that was featured in the book "Kicked, Bitten and Scratched". People who graduate from there go on to work at Sea World and major zoos. I think it helps a lot to have an advanced degree in animal biology, though. |
Sounds like such a fun job and business. Dont wait to long. Life just seems to fly by... |
I just don't even know where to begin! Should I get my business bachelors degree and go from there? I'm almost done with my AA. |

Britster, I think it depends on what you want to do. If you want to start your own pet boutique, I'd go into a few and ask people how they got started. Hopefully they'll be willing to give away their secrets. ;) For training, I would google Karen Pryor and clicker training. My bet is that she is at least peripherally involved in a certification program. Cesar Milan probably is as well. You could go to PetCo or some other training place and ask what's needed to get a job there. There may even be books or wiki "how to" pages on how to start your own business or become a trainer. Maybe for a boutique it would help to start a virtual store front. There are a lot of people here with cottage industries. You could also try to work as a vet's assistant, dog training assistant, job at a boutique, etc. |
Whatever you do, please stay in school and finish. Unless you are starting your buisness there are no jobs out in the market. Take advantage of this and get as much education as you can to prepare yourself...Good Luck, I do like the idea of a trainer |
