Yorkie first; baby second.... Hi As many of you know, I am starting to look for another Yorkie after losing Millie. Myself and my hubby will probably be thinking of starting a family in the next 5 years or so, and I am just wondering who has been in this situation of introducing a new baby into the house. I am not concerned about any potential kids harming the dog, or vice versa. They will be well supervised, and there will be plenty of time for the dog. I am sure lots of people here have kids and Yorkies. I am just wondering how "put out" the Yorkie will be, and will it depend on how long we have it before we have kids? I am sure it would probably be easier to have kids first and introduce the Yorkie so that it doesnt know life any other way, but thats not in our plans at the minute. A furbaby is all I want at the minute. :p Just looking general opinions and experiences on this. |
I have heard mixed results on this. I don't think my boys would have a problem if I had kids later on. They are very well socialized and like everyone, they are pleasant dogs and never growl, bark or snap at anything. I have heard stories about people having to rehome their yorkie once their baby got into the walking stage because the poor dog was scared to death of the baby and the walkers and things like that. I guess it all depends on the personality of the dog and of the baby! |
We got Oscar 4 months before our first son was born and he has been faboulous ever since, they are the best of friends. There was some slight jealousy when we first brought our son home almost 15 months ago, but we made sure to give Oscar plenty of attention and it's been a non-issue. We've also been very dilligent in teaching our son how to be gentle with Oscar. He now knows what "do nice" means and has learned to not to pull on his tail, ears, or legs. It helps that Oscar is on the larger side (11 lbs) and can handle alot more that some of his smaller counterparts. |
