Girls v's Boys I am just about to get my first Yorkie puppy and I was just wondering which sex to get. Im having a hard time deciding so if anyone could help me by letting me know of their experiences with either sex I'd be really grateful. |

You are going to get a whole bunch of different opinions on this one. When I starated out looking I thought I wanted a girl and I wound up with a boy...go figure. I think the best thing is to go look and meet some puppies or dogs and see who you bond with. This weeks Dog Whisperer had a great episode and part of it was how to pick the right dog for you. It was called a member of the family you should watch it. Good Luck |
I would suggest that since your not totally decided on which sex to choose from...that you go to the breeders and play with the puppies....let one choose you!!! |
I like them both, but if I had to choose - I would pick a male! They are sooo sweet and don't have attitudes like the females can go through. I was showing my girl and she was doing great as a puppy. But as soon as she hit the teenage stage - she did not want to do anything. She went through what I call the terrible 2's but in dog form. Boys are just so laid back. Also the boys seem closer to me and our girls are closer to my hubby. So you need to keep checking into it. And .... I know that girls are Really hard to find. Everyone wants a female it seems like. It is a lot easier to get a gorgeous boy!! |
I agree you will get lots of opinons. They say males are more loving...well my Sam who is a male is not loving at all. I also have a female yorkie 12 weeks old so far she isn't too loveable because it seems she is so busy playing she doesn't have time for any lovey dovey stuff...lol |

Thanks everyone for your advice. Has anyone had any problems with male dogs and the humping behaviour? Horrible question I know but its something that concerns me. |
Just get one of each.;) If you are getting a puppy and plan on having him neutered you probably won't have much trouble with the humping. Actually, we have to watch our girl when there's a large stuffed animal around, she tries to hump. |
Boys are thought to be more affectionate. On the other hand, girls have much better outfit options! Which do you want more, love or fashion? ;) Re: humping. Thor has never humped, but he does sometimes, ah, orally pleasure himself. And he likes to mark outside. I never thought I would get a boy dog because I didn't want to deal with that stuff. The thing is, when its YOUR dog, it's no big deal. The grossest things about dog is their poop, and there's no getting around that one, sadly. |

I lucked out and got a prissy frou-frou girl who is very affectionate and refuses to be away from me for more than 5 seconds ;) |
I have a male yorkie and I agree with the comments thus far...he is very affectionate, loves to be with you all the times, I call him my shadow sometimes. With the humping - that was a concern of mine also but once he was neutered, he hasn't really hump anything except his stuffed animal once. With male dogs, they do mark though, I have found that Duke marks outside and have marked inside after he was neutered. But again like someone mentioned before, if it's your dog, they can do no wrong so go and play with a few to see which one catches your attention. |
im still saying GIRL!:) They are too fun to dress up!!!! |
I have a girl and she is very loving and affectionate. She also thinks she's Queen of the Universe :) |

The urge to mate is triggered by the sent of a female in heat. A male that is neutered before he reaches sexual maturity will not have the urge to mate. I have two intact males and they do not hump anything except for the females in heat. If your dog were to start humping on you or a stuffed toy etc. tell them NO and remove the object of their obsession. A dog that humps things is unsure of its place in the pack because the humans are not displaying leadrship behavior therefore the dog believes that they need to take on that role. Be a good pack leader and you will have a good dog of either gender. Be a poor pack leader and humping will not be your only problem. My own personl opinion is that males are more affectionate and needy. If you want an independent dog, I would get a female, if you want a clingy needy dog, I would get a male. |
Among people that I consider experts in the breed, I'm told that males are more affectionate in general, and females are moodier. There are great individual differences, but this is a rule of thumb. Joey's a real cuddler, and I love that about him. The main time I think I want a girl is when I see some of the fabulous dresses, some of our vendors make, dresses and rufflie panties get me every time. I still do the topknot on Joey, but some people don't think a boy looks right in a topknot, so maybe this is something you want to consider when choosing a sex. If you're really into clothes, girls are definitely more fun. I'm not that concerned with humping, unless they try humping a human, then you should always tell them "no." Females as well as males will hump by the way, Joey stopped humping his stuffed animal about a month after he was neutered, and no intervention was necessary. :D |
Why I love this forum... Quote:
OP, I agree with letting the puppy pick you out. You can't go wrong with this technique as it will be the people dog (ie people-person if you will) :p Good Luck and post pictures when you get your baby Please. |
It is a common misconception that males are the ones who hump... Females do as well. It is not sexual by nature, it is more a dominate behavior, menaing, the dog is showing the it is in charge. I like the female Yorkie because I did not want to deal with the leg lifting that I have heard male Yorkies do more often .... I am unsure why it is said that females are less cuddly than males? Because my Female is not this way at all. She is a sweetheart. A constant follower, jumps on the couch with us, is at our side all the time, and never far away from me where ever i am. And that is in all honesty. Suzi is my first Yorkie, I guess all Yorkie's have there own different temperments, it is difficult to judge from one dog to the other. Just like humans. My suggetion, is to go to a reputable breeders home , and spend time with her and the puppies. Choose a puppy that best suits your personality. The one that comes to you, better you the one who chooses you! Forget about the sex of the puppy. :aimeeyork |
On a more serious note, this is what I have read about selecting a puppy. I myself have never picked out a puppy, so I can't personally vouch for this technique. You don't necessarily want the puppy who runs up to you, because is more likely to mean s/he is the most adventurous and outgoing, rather than because s/he senses a bond with you. You probably don't want the puppy hiding in the corner, because s/he is likely to be shy. To pick your pup, try gently rolling a puppy on its back. You want a puppy who maybe struggles a little bit, but sees it as a game. You don't want one that is overly submissive, or gets angry, or gets scared. Since dogs are not comfortable on their backs with strangers, this can indicate if your puppy will be playful and easygoing. |
Both my boys are relax and easier going. :) My 3 girls are busy, moody and like to rule the house. I found both that both sex are just as cuddly. As already mention, girl are a lot fun to dress! I would also suggest that you just go to the breeder's house and see from there. One way or the other... It's going to be great for you to get the new puppy. |
I personally always wanted a male pup. When I went to the breaders house to hava look see at the pups, a female came to me & would not leave me. Her brother (max) came over to spend some time with me while i was there and I got totally attached to the little man! I definately do not regret getting my boy!! As far as affection is concerned, max would rather play with me than get affection from me!! but he is a hellova energentic little guy!! Good Luck with your choice!! :) |
I have one of both. My male is my baby...so laid back been questioned if we tranquilize him:)....never barks, loves to sit in our laps, sleeps with us, always at my side. My female "Lola" is another story....very independent, doesn't need affection or stroking, very aggressive but not in a bad way. I love them both but prefer my Male. Hope this helps. Seems to be pretty consistent! Good luck and keep us posted.:) |
