How Do I Get Her To Sit Still and then Put the Bow In? Help! I am having a hard time getting my pup Tini who is now six months old to let me put a bow in her hair. I got one in one time, but it was a struggle. Do any of you have any tips on how to get her used to it and once she will sit still for a minute, how do I get the darn thing on her? I think the bows are so cute and I have bought a bunch off the internet, but I am so frustrated! Oh. Also her hair is changing color on her head now, is that normal? Yes, the hair change on the top on head is normal! As to the bows, I put mine on the kitchen counter by the sink, I wash her eyes out, brush her teeth, then brush Her (turns into Cujo) then put the bow in. At first she fought me bad, but just put it in any way, and then praise her and give her a treat. Mine settles down for that now. But brushing and nail clipping are a nightmare! |
Practice, practice and practice!! For you and your yorkie!! Dogs learn association...so, associate the brushing of the coat and placement of bow with something pleasurable for your yorkie....give treats, take for walks, play with it...praise her a lot. But go slow, start by getting the hair you will put in the ponny tail, if she is uncomfortable, let her do something else, rest for a while then get back to it again...she will get used to waiting for you to be finished and you will learn to do it faster!! |

When Schatzie was younger it was somewhat of a battle too. Id have her on the bathroom counter and would say a million prayers for her to hold still. Then I started giving her her toothbrush with paste on it to occupy her why I "practiced" on her top knot bows. Well, that worked but as time went on I do the same above with brushing out her body but I now move to sitting on my steps to the entry of the garage. She lies down on my lap while I talk sweet nothings in her ear and I do her top knot. It still takes me awhile but she is atleast laying down and it's much more enjoyable for the both of us. We do this each and everyday and she is very much used to this daily routine. Infact, she knows when Im getting ready in the am and just about done she barks as she knows "it's her turn" to get ready. Consistency is the key I think...Schatzie has just learned that this is her routine. Good luck! I do know it is getting easier and easier as Schatzie's hair is getting longer too. |

Sorry, I know this is off the subject of bows (Bo's hair isn't quite long enough and since he's a boy, I'll probably use a baby barrette). Mybirdys2003, what do you use to clean out your Yorkie's eyes? And do you trim the hair that grows right next to it's eyes yourself or have the groomer do it? Thanx!! :) |
I used to use baby scisssors for this but have now stopped cutting it and whilst it's in that "inbetween" stage of growing I apply a bit of vaseline to keep it down. I now regret cutting Gypsy Rose around the eye area so allowing it to grow out and have never cut Gizzie. I used to cut Gypsy's "fringe" too but now allowing the hair on her head to grow too so I can put it up in a topknot! Gizzie's hair can already be done IF my girl allowed me but I appreciate that persistance is needed!! Good advice, thanks! Ana xx |
iheartyorkies! I just keep cotton balls by the sink, run the water, and then just keep wiping them out. As to the eye hairs, I know what you mean. But my vet said to let them grow, as when they are short, can cause eye problems. So, it took awhile, but now I just brush them down and it works well. Also, no fighting and no chance of accidently cutting her by the eye. Good Luck! Pat |
Thanks, Gypsy Rose and Mybirdys2003! I guess I will let the hair around his eyes grow as well. I got him groomed yesterday and he looks ADORABLE, starting to look more adult. I had them cut the eye hair cause I too was worried about it poking him in the eye. I'll try the vaseline tip. Thanks! (LOVE THIS FORUM!!) ;) |
I just cut my Yorkies hair around her eyes for the second time this morning, and it scared me to death. She held very still and was very good about it, but scissors that close to her eyes are just plain scary!! My vet told me that I HAD to trim around her eyes, so thanks for the vaseline tip, I am going to pass that along to my vet as well. You've saved me alot of stress. :) |
You can also use hair gel! Works real good! |

Thanks Everyone! Well, I managed to get a bow in Tini's hair today. It wasn't the most fun for her or I but I did it in less than a couple of minutes. It was a little sideways and not the best looking, but she and I were both proud of her little pink bow. Now we just need to keep practicing! Thanks for all your suggestions! Joanne and Tini |
I might add, that if the bow comes out pretty easy, I take the hair and twist it, and them fold the top down, and then add the bow. My dog never had enough hair to keep it in. So, this doubles the hair and it has been a lot better since. Pat |
