Tobie is afraid of strangers... what should I do? When Tobie is at home he is fearless.... he will jump from anything, play with the bigger dogs, stand right next to the vacuum cleaner while I'm vacuuming (okay, he is afraid of the squeaking noise my curling iron makes but that's it. lol) Anyway, when I take him out and a new person approaches him to pet him, he always backs away and acts scared. However, the biggest dog can approach him (like in petsmart) and he's not scared at all. In fact, he's ready to play! Any clue why he would be scared of new people? My best guess is that some of the first new people he met (besides my parents and siblings) was the vet who put a thermometer in his bottom and poked him with needles. Do you think that could be why? I was thinking about carrying treats around with me and when someone wants to pet him, ask them if they mind giving him one. Do you think that's a good idea? Has anyone else had to do this? Any tips are appreciated! :) |
lexi is the same way.. when shes at home or she knows someone, she will go up to them and hang out. but if she dont know them and they come up to her, she crawls down to them.. i prefer it that way. i dont want her going to strangers anyway. if they were to come up on my porch by the gate, she would bark and move away from them alerting me that there is a stranger present. she will not go to strangers at anytime... its a good thing |
This is tough, because to a point you want them to be a little wary of strangers, but not fearful. Do you have some friends that would be willing to spend some time working with you on this? If not, I think the treat thing would be at least worth a try. I always take my kids favorite treat with me when we go to the vet or groomers. I'm trying to head off them totally fearing going in there. I usually stop by the vets at least once a month with cookies for the staff and whoever's with me gets greeted and passed around for hugs and kisses. I'm hoping this will help them to not associate the vets with only painful times. Good luck! |
Afraid of strangers I too agree that our Yorkies should not be afraid of stangers, think about this, if he/she gets lost and they will not allow a stranger to approach them they might not ever get back home. |
yeah true,, |
Jackson is sort of like this. Not really "fearful" just a little weary. I've taken him to little league kids baseball games and such and if someone approaches, he sort of backs up a bit. Once he's been around you for five minutes though, he's usually good and will love the person. I'm glad he's like that, though. It's almost like he waits for my approval to know the person is OK and then it makes him OK. He won't allow a stranger to come and just pick him up or pet him unless he's been around them for a good hour or so. He takes to women a lot faster than men too. Sorry, I don't really have any tips for you except to bring him in a lot of public places and get him used to other people. |

Plus, Tobie is so cute that people want to pet him and I don't want him to have anxiety about it and I definitely don't want it to progress to him growling at people. |

We had some friends to visit recently. Oscar (nearly 5 months old) sat on my lap and growled for half an hour. I gave my mate some pieces of cheese and Oscar took them, but very warily. I'm sure he wouldn't hurt anybody, and I like the fact that he doesn't make a big fuss of visitors. If people visit and ignore him, he's much more outgoing, but how many people can ignore a Yorkie pup? Also, if people he doesn't know stay for a couple of hours, he seems to relax, and he'll end up taking them toys to play. When we're out, he growls at just about anything that moves, but he is getting better with other dogs. He's particularly fond of a little westie girl at his obediance class :D |
