We took Krissy for her first grooming today. My husband dropped her off and said we wanted a puppy cut. Well they SHAVED HER:mad:. She looks horrible. I know it will grow back but it will take months. We tried to call the lady but she was already gone.

A friend recommended her but she won't be going back.

Aw! This seem's to be happening all the time.. I guess the groomer just got sissor happy. Don't worry it will grow back! :D just think of it as her summer cut:p

Im sorry you had a bad experience. Different groomers have different ideas what a puppy cut is. It is best to take a picture in of what you want

I'm sorry your first groomer experience was a bad one.When i took Bria for the first time the groomer came out to talk to us so she would know what to cut and what to leave.

maybe next time take a pic with you so that way whatever groomer you pick will KNOW for sure what you want.

Okay here is the inside scoop about groomers (I'm one).

1. when people say "puppy cut" it is not really a style and means different things to different people. Some will cut short others will leave long, but there is NOT a specific length.

2. when wives send the husband with the dog, it usually doesn't go well. Because the husband "most of the time" could care less about what the dog looks like. You tell your husband one thing but it gets translated to the groomer as another thing all together. I know first hand, because I will question the husband so much they usually say "I don't know just call my wife, and she can tell you what she wants." And when I make the phone call the wife is saying something different then what the husband told me. The men just want to drop the dog off, sign the paper, and leave as quick as possible.

3. and then of course there are groomers who just don't know what they are doing and don't really care, because it is all about the money. Thats when you end up with a shaved dog. It's the style that takes the least amount of time, therefore they can do more dogs that day and that means more money.

Here are the ways things go smoother:

1. If you are not going to drop the dog off yourself: send a note, have the groomer call you, have a picture, and/or make sure the person dropping the dog off knows exactly what you want and do not want. Explain fully what you want to the groomer, saying "just cut a little bit, or just trim it up" more then likely is going to get you something you don't want. A trim to me is just shaping up the dogs hair and cutting off the scraggly hairs. A trim to someone else is cutting off 1/4 - 1/2 inch all over.

2. the most important find a good groomer, one who cares. Don't just pick one out the phone book. Word of mouth is great and you can ask here on YT or on City-Data.com Forum: Relocation, Moving, Local City Discussions .

I was also very unhappy with the first groomer that I took Poppy to. I found a different groomer and they sat down with me and showed me a book with pictures of different cuts in so I could pick exactly the look I wanted. She has been going to this groomer for the last 4 years and ive never had a problem. Try and make it clear exactly the way you want them to look when you drop them off each time.
I hope this hasn't put you off groomers as there are an awful lot of great one's out there.

Bailey was shaved the first time due to mats. Yes i cried. Puppyhood was difficult enough without the shave. The worst part was that we were in puppy classes and everyone saw :eek: LOL. Fortunately, it does grow back. :)

I have had groomers do that to Sam more than once. I really don't think a lot of these groomers listen to us as to how we want our babies cut. I have finally found the best groomer.

That is great information! Thanks! I think the majority of us have gone through this and it is frustrating and heartbreaking to say the least. It is nice to hear a groomers advice.

So sorry that happened! I learned you have to be very specific with groomers. I start with how short on the face and move down to the tail and feet. It took me a while to find someone I like! Finally, I found a groomer I love. It does take alot of trial and error!

I'm so sorry. This same thing happened with Leo. I was SO mad. Not only did I say 'puppy cut' (which I now read from dogears is basically meaningles :)) but I also brought a picture of how I wanted him to look. Still, she shaved him. What is wrong with these people?? Now I cut his hair on my own. It doesn't look the amazing but it looks decent and at least I know they aren't going to shave him down to the skin and have him looking like a darn boiled hotdog. And I hope to get better the more I do it. I've only done it twice so far.

I keep hearing people say their babies had to be shaved because of mats. Is that because of coat texture? Because Laddy is 6 months old and we have never had mats??? I have only trimmed him myself being a retired hairdresser it hasn't seemed that hard to me .:rolleyes:

She said nothing of mats. Her hair didn't have any. You can tell she used clippers and shaved her. She doesn't even look like the same dog. She won't be going back. THanks for all the helpful info. I am glad ti at least happened when the south Louisiana heats is going to start.
