How much do you feed your larger Yorkie? My little one is 8lbs going on 9 and he eats a little over 1/2 cup of kibble a day with a treat or two. The treats vary from fruits, hard-boiled egg, store bought, etc. I wanted to guage if I was feeding him too much/too little by your resonses. *I can't free feed because he will finish everything in the bowl in one sitting :p! |
I have 4 inside and will be adding one more next month. I free feed(my biggest one is over 14 lbs). They really don't eat anymore, I keep their bowl full and then pull it up at 6:00 p.m they quit eating like pigs when they realize it's down for them all the time. my sister feeds hers once a day, she said the same thing as you, so, when we were both at my Moms once, and she was going out, I put food down, they ate like pigs for a bit, but, then quit when they were full. I did prove my point;) |

I feed him twice a day, around a 1/4 cup each time. |
:D My sister has 5 dogs, I have visited her a few times(we live 6 1/2 hours away). She separates all 5 dogs(they each have their own little area) and they gulp it down. I guess I free feed mine, because I want to eat when I want and I'm not always hungry at meal time. I have been free feeding for years. They tend at first to eat more, as they always think it will get pulled up. They learn when it's down all the time they can go eat a little then take a break, and then go eat some more. I think if you give it a couple days, you would see him slow down. How old is your little guy? He's absolutely adorable in that avatar picture |
Winston is a 9 pounder now and is free fed...kibble...and fed wet food 3 times a day...plus treats. I did not want an over-weight yorkie, but he has hypoglycemic seizures...the vet has instructed me to feed frequent small meals. But in reality, it amounts to about a 1/4 cup dry and 6 TBS wet daily...with a cookie or yogurt drop in between meals. So if that's what it takes to keep his sugar up and seizure free, that's what I'll do. |
Thank you! He's 10 months old. Love the little puppyface in your avatar too. |
Cash's food is out all day, he is about 8lbs and can go a couple days without really eating at all and then gobble a bunch down. He mostly eats when hes angry. |
When we just had Moose, we just free fed him. He mainly only ate when we were in the kitchen with him. :p Then we got Mimi and she was a little food aggressive when we first got her. She also would eat all her food and then go and eat Moose's food too. He would let her  Mimi is 9.5 lbs and Moose is 14.5 lbs. Both get 1/4 cup of kibble every morning, then at night (around 5:00) Mimi gets 1/2 cup of kibble and Moose gets 3/4 kibble. So bottom line....Mimi get 3/4 cup per day and Moose 1 cup per day. We are very active. We walk 2 to 3 miles 4 to 5 times a week. :animal-pa |
My Yorkie is just under 10 lbs and he eats just over a cup of kibble a day. The other thing to keep in mind is what brand you're feeding. Different brands have different protein and caloric count so feeding varies from dog to dog and breed to breed. I feed Nature's Variety and they recommend 1 1/8 cup a day for a 10lb dog that is active to moderately active. I give him that much per day in two sittings and he usually lets his morning meal sit and eats both servings at night. I feed him breakfast before I leave for work and he doesn't eat when we are away, when I come home I feed him dinner and he eats both sittings at the same time. He may pick a bit at his food during the day but it's rare. |
Oscar is 11 lbs and free fed about a cup a day, sometimes a little more if he's been exceptionally active. He is very very active to begin with and when the weather is nice, he could spend the whole day out back just running around like a maniac. |

My Jemma is 5 months and 3 pounds. She eats 1/4 cup at 7am and 1/4 cup at 5 pm Total of a 1/2 cup a day. However she is now leaving no food behind at all, so I'm going to increase it today a little because she now seems a bit hungry after eating. That's my cue. |
