First long car trip- advice? Chase is going on his first more-than-an-hour-long car trip this weekend. He has gotten sick when he's been in a car around 20-30 minutes. It's not really enjoyable for him at all and I feel so bad for him:(. Having the window does seem to help him a lot. Any other suggestions? I don't think I'll be getting a doggie car seat yet, as we don't have a car (one of the pitfalls of living in the city!). |
Maybe try building him up to the trip. Take him for 15 min car rides every day (maybe a few times a day) so that he can get used to the car. I did that with Chloe before her first long trip, and she is fine now! We drive 3 hours with her once every two weeks. She just sleeps the whole time! Good luck! |
Thanks for the advice! That's what my dad suggested as well, but since we don't have regular access to a car it will be kind of tough to pull off :p. |
I had the same problem with Suzi :( She finally stopped throwing up in the car... But, still hates riding in the car tremendously. What I had to do was always bring a towel . Cover the seats. And than bring anther smaller towel to clean chase up, and puppy wipes will come in handy. Pet Chase a lot, and continue to give him lot's of reasurrance. Try to calm him down all through the car ride. This is very important. Suzi use to pant real hard, but, this is better than getting sick. Talk to Chase too. the sound of your voice will be comforting. It does get better, but he needs to have more experiences in the car in order to know that he is going to be ok . If he is not exposed to riding in the car than he is not going to become use to it. |
My little Deuce gets carsick too. From advice I got here, I give him 1/2 of a Bonnie tablet. It's an over the counter med, like dramamine, but doesn't cause drowiness. Works great for him. He is a little over 8 lbs, so maybe start with 1/4 tablet, depending on his weight; or better yet, check with your vet to be sure. I'm sure you could get meds from your vet too. |
TRy some ginger snap cookies prior to a trip, it is supposed to help, the ginger is good for the stomach, cant hurt unless he he is on a special diet or something |
Giving him Bonine sounds like a good idea to me. I have terrible motion sickness, and there's nothing worse. Poor little guy must feel awful. Call your vet, and ask him for suggestions if you don't want to try the Bonine. |
Jackson was horrible in the car for the first 2 weeks when I got him, he would just bark and bark. Now he absolutely loves it. He sits in the backseat and sticks his little nose out of the crack of the window I roll down for him, he really is great about it. It just took a lot of car rides for him to finally realize he was going to be OK in the car, lol. Unfortunately, I see you don't have a car so that'd be difficult to do. Jackson would go on car rides with me usually 2 times a week to get him used to it. I go and visit my dad often w/ Jackson and he's 45-50 minutes away. |
Yeah, I really wish I could get him adjusted by taking him on regular car rides. He's thrown up a couple of times, so I'll make sure to have extra towels and puppy wipes on hand. Poor guy. The good thing is he's back to his normal self as soon as he gets out of the car. I've never heard of the Bonnie tablet... will email the vet to see if and how much to give him. The ginger cookies are a great idea for Chase. His favorite activity is eating :rolleyes:. |
I'm fairly certain that car sickness in dogs is mostly due to anxiety and not actual motion sickness. You could try benadryl and the vet may recommend that as well. I give my two bully sticks in the car so they don't get bored. They don't get sick, but it keeps them busy when they aren't napping :) |
I always give 1/2 a Bonine 30 minutes before any dog show trip to those of mine that get car sick and it helps tremendously....bonine is non drowsy and I wouldn't recommend anything that would cause drowsyness in my opinion. You can't assume that your dog is just suffering from anxiety , and that is causing him to be sick. Some dogs suffer from motion sickness just like humans do. And believe me, it's a miserable feeling. I take Bonine all the time--even for short rides. It's worth a try. You don't want your little guy to suffer. |
I don't know how old he is, but if possible try not to feed him before he travels. Two of mine are very prone to car sickness. If I don't feed them in the morning before we set off they can travel ok. They can then seem to eat little snacks when we stop & they have a walk & a drink. But if I feed them, even a few hours, before we set off they throw up in the first mile! xx Meggie |
