to shave or not :confused:I really have been undecided to either keep my 9 month old yorkie long haired or to have it clipped real short. I have let grow for months now, but her fur is getting really matted. Does anyone have this problem too? :aimeeyork Gracie and :) Kellie |
I have to keep Sam who is 4yrs old in a puppy cut, his hair on top of his head is kept long and in a ponytail. Sam has fur that gets very matted and I have to get him groomed about every 8 weeks. |
Yorkies needs lots of grooming! If you want to keep his hair long, you need to discipline yourself and brush your baby every other day max. If you aren't big on grooming or like to dress up the dog, than short hair might be the right option for you. Here are some pictures of Teddy with different hair cut . Teddy's Album I think they look good either way. ;) |
I had to keep my first Yorkie in a puppy cut for all of his 13 years. He had a thick cottony coat that would mat very easily. He looked real cute in the puppy cut. He was a teapot with short little legs, stocky solid body, Teddy bear face with cute little ears. Piper does not look good in a puppy cut. She has silky hair that doesn't really mat, tiny boned, longish legs, petite little face and ears. In a puppy cut she looks naked and real leggy. She looks best in longer hair. |
long and short i have one very small girl and she get around on just 3 legs and real doesnt like her hair done so i have cut it short her top hair is a bit longer and the rest is short ,mikey is our little lion so i have shaved his body short and his face is like a lion her looks so handsome .sadie has long hair and it does need to be groomed everyday or it is had to control |
We like the puppy cut - only because Bailey looks soooo cute!! good luck! |
SophieKate is an advocate of the puppy cut also. I tried to let it grow but she is to much of a wild child, rolling in the grass and acting like a dang fool. I am letting her face grow out on the sides and keeping a visor cut for around the eyes. She will not wear a bow, I have tried many times and she does somersaults to get the thing out. |
I keep Zoe short also. She doesn't get too matted when growing out except on the legs but she gets dirty much faster. We live in the country and when she goes out, she rolls around and gets stickers stuck in the longer hair. |
If you have the time to groom your baby then i would keep it long. At 9months old your dog is still shedding its puppy coat which will cause matting. This stopped on my yorkie after he hit a year. But the long hair is high maintnance. Pasta gets combed twice a day to keep his coat silky and matte free. Here is the name of a leave in detangler that i got from my groomer. You can purchase it online. It is AMAZING! Worth every penny. Its by Best Shot Pet Products and its called Ultra Vitalizing Mist. Go to Best Shot Pet Products Intl. Manufacturer - All Natural Dog Shampoo, Horse Shampoo & Cat Shampoo. Professional Pet Care and Grooming Products! for more information! Whatever you choose to do, your yorkie will still be a cutie! |

Mine are in puppy cuts. I have time to groom them but with the short cuts we just stick to faces and teeth every day and baths once a week. Both of them have very thick coats so the short hair makes drying time easier too. I didn't just shave them though - Loki has a very specific cut for his face and we don't shave his nose. Sammy keeps her beautiful topknot - luckily it's the only silky part of her hair and OK to manage. Strangers know they are Yorkies right away and I actually think it gives them more character since they both have unique cuts :) |
yes you can use it daily. it doesnt take much. if you over use it, it can make your dog look greasy. also, just like our human hair the shampoo and conditioner make a huge difference when you bathe them. if you need a suggestion for that let me know. are you combing with a steel tooth comb or a brush? its good to work through the hair with the comb first and then use the brush to smooth the hair. Let me know if you need any other pointers! :) |

Erin, I really like your dogs hair style (is that the right word), I keep SophieKate in a Puppy Cut but would love to have a top knot. Would you mind if I printed one of your pictures as an example for my groomer. Thank you, Cheryl |
