teacup Yorkie and reaction! I had my rescued 8 1/12 year old neutered male teacup Yorkie get his Rabies shot at a local Rabies clinic given by our vet yesterday morning. I was told what symptoms to watch out for in case he might have a reaction. Surprise! He was very lethargic, yesterday afternoon and early evening he threw up. I called the vet and was told to give him 1/4 of a 12.5mg Children's Benadryl tablet once every 4 hours and get him to drink, and that this should help him out. I did this, but he didn't want any water. I stayed close to him and he has now had 3 1/4 pieces of the Benadryl and he took a huge drink of water this morning (AND ate most of his breakfast). He's still very lethargic, but he looks up at me a lot now and he also wants to potty when needed. I absolutely LOVE this dog and don't want him sick like this!!!!!! Before he was rescued, a man had kicked him and broken his hips with no medical help for him. I've checked with my vet and he's doing very well now and to leave that issue alone. Okay, but how do I take care of my baby, now that he's having this reaction? He only weighs 3.1 pounds! Help! |
I don't understand, are his ribs still broken? What do you mean leave that issue behind? Sometimes the ribs can heal on the own, but I would imagine a dog being lethargic would be one of the symptoms. A three pounder might always have issues with hypoglycemia, (low blood sugar) you should study the condition be familiar with the symptoms. One of the symptoms is loss of appetite, and since food is the thing they need to raise the blood sugar, this symptom can be dangerous. Many people recommend free feeding because of this, and this allows the blood sugar to remain at a normal level at all times. Other symptoms include drowsiness, shivering, collapsing, disorientation, seizures, listlessness, depression, muscle weakness and tremors. Nutri-cal, or white corn syrup can be rubbed on the roof of their mouths for fastest results in getting blood sugar levels back to normal. Hypoglycemia Symptoms and Treatment Some tinies are small due to hereditary factors, however others are small because of health problems, I would want to make sure there isn't an underlying health factor such as liver shunt because what you feed your dog needs to be adjusted if this is the case. Glad your little guy found a good home. Hope you vet is familiar with working with tinies and adjust medicines and vacines accordingly, my guess is one shot fits all, and the rabies shot was just too much for the little guy. |
Can you believe the same dosage that was given to your 3.0 lbs dog is given to a 200 lb dog, So Barbaric. Same as a heartworm pill 25 lbs and under. I dont get it. But the Benedryl worked for my Westie who gets a reaction to shots. I hope someone can give you better advise. So nice to hear the love you have for your Rescue..... |
My senior Lady had a reaction to her last rabies shot, too. She had to be on steriods for about a week afterwards. She's a diabetic, though, so she has a problem with vaccines. |
Zoe really scared me too the last time she got her rabies shot. She started to perk up after about 24 hours but that first night, I hardly got any sleep and she was not herself. VERY lethargic. After a full 24 hours, she started to perk up and by the day after that, she was fine! Hope your baby is just having a similar reaction and it's nothing to worry about! |
Welcome to YT! So sorry your guy is not doing well. Thank you for rescuing him. I prey he is feeling better very soon. |
I really hope that he's ok. I can tell that you are very worried. Just don't hesitate to take him into the vet if you think that you should. |
