How old is your Yorkie? Logan is 1 yr. 8 months, and I've noticed that he seems to be getting more "clingy" with me. It seems like separation anxiety might be kicking in, so I'm wondering if this is natural when they hit a certain age???

I did kind of an 'alone training' when Triss was a pup. (This was advice from other YTer's at the time. :)) I would at first leave her alone for 15-20 minutes. When I came back, I wouldn't make it a big deal and she wouldn't get any attention right away. I would increase the time alone slowly over time. Now, she is a year old and she is fine when I leave for a few hours and come back. She does get excited but has learned to 'contain herself' until I come to say hi to her. She also sleeps in a separate room at night in her xpen with Spike. I think that has helped a lot too.

Molly is 5 years old; and I think seperation anxiety could develop at any time, especially if there's a change in lifestyle...

I would definitely take the advice from the reply's in this thread. Good Luck!;)

I think that's great, and I think that some people don't think to do this with their puppy because not every dog develop's seperation anxiety.

Everyone should take into consideration, that when we treat them like our child, they think of us as their parent. ;)

I'm sorry your baby has separation anxiety :(

My miniature schnauzer had separation anxiety when we would leave as well. But she would get destructive; she DESTROYED a HUGE calculus book. Well, I have always been the "anti crate" kind of person, but had no choice with her. So we started putting her in a cage-like crate with my yorkie whenever we'd leave. She was almost IMMEDIATELY better! She LOVES her "cagey" and happily goes in there when told to. She also happily sleeps in there whenever I need to leave her with my parents (she normally sleeps with us in bed).

I now understand that dogs really do see a crate as a "safe place". Oh, and I'm sure giving her a treat every time she went in the crate before we left helped :rolleyes:

Have you tried some sort of flower essence? My sister uses them for her Chihuahua (who has a ton is issues), and they help her!

She uses Bach's Flower Essence - Rescue Remedy.

She also highly recommends Spirit Essences Spirit Essences - Holistic Remedies for Animals and they help too. They have one for Separation anxiety.

These remedies can help in conjuntion with training/behavior modification.
Thanks for posting that link. It looks great! I'm having some non-behavioral issues with Sugar right now and I might give this a shot.
