Teacup Yorkie
 

ok I knew that title might get some people to read this. I need some help. My husband's uncle does not believe me that there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie, and he swears that it is on his yorkies paperwork. So does anyone know where I can find a website that states that this is untrue, i'm looking for a website like AKC or something he will believe, not just a breeders site or anything like that, I need something really reputable. It drives me crazy that he does not believe me, i'm 24 and he's in his 40's so the likeliness of him believing me isn't likely but if I have proof he might. So please help me prove him wrong!!

You could go to AKC.org. I think they might say something about this. Not positive though. We all know you're right!!! Hope you get him convinced:)

Teacup is a nickname for a very small dog in that a particular breed, there is no "official definition for word teacup, and people use it in many different ways. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, (YTCA) is the mother club of the yorkie, and sets the standard for the AKC, which is just a registry. Yorkies belong to the "toy" group and the standard for a Yorkshire terrier, is said to be 7 pounds and below. So there is no other classification besides standard. Other breeds have three classifications such as standard, miniature, and toy, with toy being the smallest, but no breed has a classification for teacup, this is just something people started calling them because some toy breed puppies can fit in a teacup. YTCA members are forbidden to use the word "teacup", and breeders who use the word, often sell dogs that grow up being over standard size. So your uncle is partially correct, there is such a word, it has no formal definition, so it's meaningless, and when a breeder uses the word, you should run the other way. I have heard of other members saying that they were given "papers" saying that their dog was an "official teacup" but anyone can make up papers, and these are worthless, the AKC would not put this on any of it's papers because there is no such classification.

The AKC is just a registry, they don't set the standard, each dog breed has a mother club that sets the standard, and they use the AKC for their registry. Here you go: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (Awards) This is from the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. They are the ones that write the breed standard and send it along to the AKC. They make it very clear that there are no "teacups."

Myself, I don't get all shook up about the term being used. Other breeds use the term to describe the smaller members of their breed. Unfortunately some unscrupulous breeders made the term undesireable as they kept breeding even the littlest of the Yorkies to capitalize on the "teacup" idea. If not for that, I would not see anythign wrong with it. But, the YTCA says no to teacups, so that is the last word as far as AKC standards goes.

He may have some paperwork saying teacup, but it probably something typed up by the breeder, not a registery.

So no major registry recognizes that term, however there are a lot of unscrupulous breeders that have made up their own registries, and they can register anything the want. Like I said earlier, anybody can start a registry.

Lol, I grew up with the word teacup, and was surprised to learn on Yorkietalk, "that there was no such word." I think if you can explain to someone there is no official definition of the word; they can understand it better. You could always ask your uncle to give you links for an "official definition" but it can't be from "breeders sites" and things of the nature. Without an official definition the word "teacup" could mean anything, so that's why the word is only good as a "nickname" usually meaning smaller than average, but then you have to have a definition for "average", and does this mean average for all breeders, or average of breeders who breed to standard? The average for the breeders who breed to standard is 4-6 pounds, the average for other breeders and those that avertise "teacups" is probably much higher.

Well what's really funny is the "teacup" yorkie he has is about 6-7 lbs, so even if there was such a classification his yorkie wouldn't fit it lol. If he doesn't believe me after this then I just give up, I hope he doesn't bring it up again, the only reason it was brought up is because he asked if my Bandit was a teacup, I said he is 4 lbs, there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie. He said "oh yes there is, mine is and it's on her paperwork". it's just annoying, oh well, some people just refuse to get it, either that or he got ripped on the price and just wont admit it lol.

I think you may be right.... and stubborn people drive me crazy...

Go to any book store, like Books A Million. I bought several books about Yorkies, there when I got my Chance, all the books say there is no teacup yorkies. There is one Yorkie. The word teacup, was just thought up by back yard breeders wanting to make more money, the teacups they call are really the runts of the liter. Take him to a book store, he can see it in black and white, or you could just buy him the a book then he would always have proof you were right. Let us know how this goes, please.
