How long does the chewing last??? Isla is 9 1/2 months, almost 10, and she seems to be chewing on everything worse than when she was teething! How long does this last? It's driving me nuts! The kids can't have anything on the floor or it's guaranteed trash. She has toys galore and chew sticks, but she would rather chew on anything else...paper, mcdonald's toys, dvd cases, etc. AAAHHHHHH!!!!! |
I think it lasts all their lives, but Joey's learned not to chew on my stuff. I'm not sure they are completely through teething at 9 months, are all the adult teeth in? Dogs do continue to have a need to chew even after they are through teething. Besides bully sticks we also got one of those huge chewing bones for Joey. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...pictureid=7724. Use apple bitter or clear deodorant for things not meant to be chewed on, and limit access to the house. Your kids are going to have to learn to keep their things picked up, and no matter what age, they are going to want to chew the wrappers from McDonalds, they can smell the food. I've taught Joey to keep off the coffee table, but if your kids are putting things on the floor, it might be easier to teach them not to do this, then it is to teach your dog, not to go for it. It's a toss up. :D Remember a dog cannot understand the difference between their toys and the children's toys. |
Mine is going on 10 mos and going through more teething again. All of mine have quit chewing by the time they're around a year old |
My Suzi just turned a yr old in March. Not too long ago she discovered my son's Video games:eek: She pulls them out and chews the boxes ... I will hear her, and she will know she is in trouble, not a moment after the incident , Suzi tries it again! She always goes for the same two games. I use a firm NO! And put the two games up... The covers are gone, and my son wants new games now .He has high functioning autisn, and the visual cover is very important to him:eek: About the chewing, My best thing is Bully sticks, and still puppy proofing the home. I do not know, but it seems likt Yorkies love to chew and get into everything! My Suzi certainly does! When she has something she should not, she will run away with it ! THen I have to chase her! She is a very smart little girl! Suzi still loves tissue papers paper towels , and pick pockets everybody who sits on our couch... She grabs their kleenix! in a flash! |
Maddie is over a year and is still chewing. I think Bunny stopped around two or so. Maddie loves to get into everything...nothing is safe!:) |
1 Attachment(s) Haven't you seen the Yorkie Property Laws? |
That Yorkie Property thing is hilarious! You know, Isla is good if she has something and I say "drop", she will right away. I taught her that at the same time as "sit." But with the 4 kids under 6 years it's really hard to monitor all their toys all over the house. And doesn't it seem that all our kid's toys contain 60+ pieces for each toy????? I think the guys at the toy manufacturing company get together and laugh their cans off for doing this. Anyways, my point is that it's too much to expect the kids to constantly pick up after themselves all the time. And Isla capitalizes on this! Though she's pretty good about listening when caught, it's catching her before the item is garbaged. And, yes, paper seems to be a favorite! What's with that? Is it the noise? The texture? At least you can hear it when she has some.:p I'll just have to hope that she'll get the point over time that only the toys in her basket are hers for the chewing... |

this is too funny and just too true!!!:lol tears |
Mine stopped the chewing of things they werent supposed to at 1 1/2 |
I feel for the ones of you that have them over a year and still chewing, I guess I have been very fortunate. the only things mine chew on are their chew bones. My sons 2 also were done right around a year or maybe 13 or 14 mos. they will be 2 in July and it's been awhile since I've seen his chewing too. I probably have 20 chewies down on the floor though |

My kids know very good and well, not to bring their toys out of their room. They are older though. If you have a playroom set up, that might help, just dont let the pup in :) Now, my 17month old is a different story  She shares her toys with the pups. Shes teething too, so they sit and gnaw on toys together. Its actually quite funny to watch. But yea, anything we dont want munched, goes up high, or in a room they are not allowed in :) |

Lol, have you tried giving your human baby, bully sticks? On second thought it might cause too many fights. :D Another thing that worked for us, was an oversize coffee table in the family room. Kids can play with their toys on the table, yet it's fairly easy to teach the dog "paws off"! |
