Thanks guys, I prefer the pencil only also, however when he first started the colors, he started on the shirt, and with just some stuff colored was kinda cool too. Hes not trying to get rich, I like keeping him drawing and figured if we asked a small fee it would offset all the pencils, erasers and what nots he buys.

Considering that your husband is producing original works of art, the price is VERY reasonable. Although both pieces are beautiful -- I prefer the colored pencil version.

He is very talented and does amazing work. The pictures posted in this thread, the ones I have, and the many he has done of your fur kids & grandchildren that you have posted in your album are all proof of that!
For the time and effort he puts into them, I think your price range is very fair and reasonable.

Both are gorgeous. Price is more than fair, maybe a little low depending on amount of time it takes him to do it. Since you may not always be able to get frames/matting on sale, you might want to consider just sending the drawing safely & let the owners do the framing. Since he's probably going to do a lot of special orders, I would require cashiers check up front before he's done any of the art work. And yes, be very specific as to size, colors, etc. He may find a market for them locally, but he's not going to want to invest a lot of time & have them setting around collecting dust either. Great job!

They are both beautiful...I like the black and white or the color...oh my gosh I can't decide which I like better... but If I were you I'd set up a paypal acct they are free except for a small percentage when you process a card....that way you can send an invoice when someone orders and get payment up front..oh and charge for the shipping...I do agree to let the buyers get the matting and frames so they can get what they like...and you can then maybe ship in a tube to keep them from getting messed up in shipping..but price that and figure in the cost...I too think your pricing is great and maybe even a little low..but i don't know much about pricing art...all that said I too am going to get a good pic of my baby and have him do one for me..

I think they are both GREAT!!!! My favorite is the black & white but I do like the colored one. I'm with the others, I would love to have one of mine. Your hubby did/does a great job!!!! And for a special work of art the price is not out of line.

I think your DH is very talented. I especially liked the addition of color. I used to do a lot of painting and pen and ink. I sold my work and taught classes at home and at the community school. Pricing is the hardest part of selling your artwork. You can try different things to come up with a price, hourly rate, cost of supplies X a factor, going rate in galleries, etc.... but bottom line, you just have to find a price you are happy doing the work for and one that others will pay for it.

I can't say for sure what the sketch is worth. What details were agreed upon in the original offer? Size, medium, etc. Does it really look like the person's dog? It looks like it would fit in a 5X8 frame, judging by the pencil size. Right? Check to see what other 5X8 pencil sketches of one subject are going for. Wandering a few arts & crafts fairs would be a good place to start. That is the type work this is comparable to. Now, if he wants to get into fine art, galleries and fine art shows would be the place to compare. But I am thinking you might want to start with the art & craft fair venue. That will give a good idea of how to price.

Once I started selling for a certain price, I let the market guide me. If I was selling out quickly, I raised my prices next time out. If something did not move, I might lower it. Special orders were tougher. I would pick something comparable and then add a bit, maybe 20% depending on the price, unless it seemed particularly difficult, then I might add more.

i dont want to come off as picky or miss know it all
but you asked for honest opinion and here's what i think

$45 dollars is a fair price especially if it included shipping :)

but personally i am very critical and picky when it comes to drawings
i was raised by my grandparents whom are crazy artists/professors. they are the kind of artists you would call the traditional institutionalized kind and hates "deviant" art or artists (like dada artists).
i am a "failure" by their standards
so basically here's what they would say if those drawings came from me:
"the pencil one lacks contrast. there's no depth. its just floating on the paper. too many light parts with not enough darkness to contrast. the hairs are too stiff and lacks life. the eyes does not shine nor do they capture the observer's eyes. the coloured one feels a little lost. the jacket has nice contrast and colours with the correct shades but the hair has no contrast at all. theres such a lack of contrast on the dog's face that one would not be able to tell if the dog has a muzzle or not."

but if it was up to me to buy one of those two pictures i'd take the coloured one. its much easier to draw black and white - and a lot less work and planning, if theres a mistake the eraser will fix it but its a lot harder to fix coloured drawings. i love colour in general and i think doggie drawings should always be in colour. what other way can you reflect their colourful personality :D

Linda....I think those drawings are just precious!!! And ofcourse the price is fair!!!

If those drawings were absolutely PERFECT....then of course your DH would have to charge a hell of a lot more!!!! Don't ya think!!! It's better than anything I can draw....I'd pay that for a personal drawing of my angels!!!

I do like the one with color better! It has alot more depth to it...IMO!
