Getting soooooooo nervous! I am doing the right thing, right? Ok, so I know lots of you have seen my thread about Ranger and his LP. Well he's going in for bilateral luxating patella surgery on Tuesday (this thread is not about that or about how worried SICK I am about it) and since they have to do such a drastic clip job on the back legs/hips, and the front leg for the cath, I decided to take him in and get his little body clipped down pretty short :( My justification is that it can all grow in together that way. I am taking him into a groomer that I have used before but only for nail trims and ear trims. There are two ladies there who are soooo nice, and they have always let me stay and watch, so I will be there watching. It's not like one of those places where they do everything in the back (which totally freaks me out). Anyway, I am feeling bad for some reason. I know most of it is my own vanity because I won't have my baby with a beautiful coat for some time now. Do you think it will stress him out too much? I just don't want to have to bother with grooming while he's hurting, and want his coat to grow back all one length. Is this the right thing to do?? |
you are SHAVING him right?? I'd just worry about him being too cold- especially since he will be just LAYING for quite a while- but i guess he can have a sweater on or a blanket. I think it makes the most sense- especially since if you left it long that hair is gonna smell like hospital and you dont' want to have to brush him out and stuff- i think it is the best idea to do what you are doing- get a nice short cut! can we see pictures when he comes back :D |
You are doing the right thing, Tarra had to have surgery on her elbow and they shaved her half way, I wish I had done it before they did it, its been almost a year and she is growing out great, I am trying to wait alittle longer and have her trim one length, but your doing the right thing, his hair will grow back and it will be so much easier on both of you with his recovery. Best of Luck, post pics, he will be adorable!:) |

As far as pics.. um, we'll see  I guess unless it's really bad then I'll just steal a pic of Layla, photoshop her bow blue, and say "look how cute he is!!" |

I think that's a great idea. Hair grows back. Think how easier it will be to keep Ranger clean also during his healing time. He won't want to be brushed I'm sure being sore and all so if he's sporting a shorter cut no matts to worry about either. I bet he'll look adorable. It's more important to keep him comfy and you with less work during his healing time. Can't wait to see pictures. You may even like it. I bet you do Amanda. |

I actually think it's a great idea. I would never have thought of it. It will so much easier on both of you, and his hair will look much better growing in more evenly. I do understand your not wanting to cut his beautiful hair, but just keep telling yourself 'it will grow back'. |
Amanda, I think its a great idea. You are doing a great job hang in there, everything will be alright... |
I had given Hot Rod and Maggie their summer cuts (really short) in March so he was pretty short. I kinda wished I trimmed him some more. They shaved him down pretty good for surgery so when he is able, I am going to try and even his coat up. It will be easier to sponge bath him afterwards also. Waiting til he can have that (drs orders). But he has been cleaning himself so it will be a whole lot easier if he was short. Please try to not stress yourself out and second guess your decisions now; I know, easy to say but you are being a great mommy! Your baby doesn't want you to be so stressed out either. :) |

awwwww I am praying for Ranger's quick recovery! :) Im sure he'll be adorable and do great through the surgery! |
when Lacy had her sides, abdomen and chest shaved I just left the top of her back and everything else stay long. I figured the bottom part would eventually grow out...she does look pretty funny naked right now though. So I always have her in clothes so you can't see her crazy hair cut too much. I don't think the dogs worry about their hair as much as we do..I think as long as we still make them feel beautiful/handsome they are fine. So if you think it's easier to shave and let it all grow out, go for it. I'd just keep some shirts and sweaters on hand in case he gets cold |
Haircuts are a great excuse to buy more clothes! |
