Nervous Mommy! Can someone ease my worries? Romey has been due for his rabbies shot he is 3lbs and my vet will not do it because hes saying the shot will be too strong for him, I know he needs it but I have been puttin it off well I forgot that he needs it in ordered to get groomed so I called the groomer to set and apt up for him and they need his shot records my vet is still saying no so I had to call another place and they said he will be fine so he goes on Saturday.... What should I expect he is very hyper will be not be hyper that day? Will it make him sick???:( |
How old is he? You should wait at least until he is six months old, if not longer since he is little. |
He just turned 6months yesterday |
When peanut got his first rabies shot he was very small as well..I think about 2.5-3 ish dont worry he will be fine. Peanut was really out of it after his shot and very sore. He just layed around and didnt even want to be touched! All dogs are different so you never know how they will react. After his shot I would just let him go home and rest. That way you can keep an eye on him if he has a reaction to the vaccine. Dont worry it will all be ok!! |
The vet Im going to this weekend (new vet new puppy) says 16 weeks for rabies......so my new little one is scheduled for his at that appt, along with last set of other shots. Whats this of not having the rabies until 6 months? |
My Fisher was 2.5lbs when he got his last round of shots and did great! Never missed a beat. I think all dogs are different but maybe this helps you feel a little better |

Baxter got his rabies at four months. But that's the law here in NC. He was probably around four or five pounds. Afterwards, he still played and acted normal! :) |
Rabies vacine 1 Attachment(s) Zipper weighed 3lbs. 6 oz and my vet gave him his shot and other than crying when he had the shot there were no side effects! |
If my vet was willing to hold off on a rabies shot, there is no way I'd do it... Your pup will likely be fine because a lot of small pups get them but the shot is very potent and it isn't extremely safe. I say go with the original vets advice. If you are in a state where medical waivers are an acceptable replacement for rabies shots, then maybe your vet can write you one to take to the groomer. A lot of states require it at 4 months but some vets will let you wait. I would personally avoid vaccinating this early if at all possible. The rabies shot should never be given on the same day as any other shot. |
My vet won't give rabies until they are at least 6months old. |
