Opinions about rabies vaccination Tobie has a vet appointment tomorrow to get his 4th set of shots. During our last appointment the vet gave us a puppy schedule and it says at 16 weeks of age a puppy gets its 4th set of shots and rabies vaccine. I spoke to a vet tech when I made my appointment and she says that she's sure the vet will split them up because Tobie is so small. I'm sure he will split them up too because they split up his last set of shots and the kennel cough shot. Here's my question... The vet tech said she's not sure which one he will want to do first. What if he wants to do the rabies vaccine tomorrow and the 4th set of shots next week or even the other way around? After the stories that I have heard I'm not sure I want to do the rabies shot this soon. I might feel weird telling the vet (who obviously knows much more about animals than me) that I want to wait. When did you get your baby's rabies shot? What should I do? He's so small, I just worry SOO much about him! |
When puppies get their rabies vaccination is set by state law, unlike the other vaccinations. Oklahoma law requires that all dogs and cats be vaccinated for rabies by four months old and then a booster within one year. After that, he will need a booster every three years. If Toby is 16 weeks old, he will probably get his rabies shot tomorrow to comply with the law. |
I would put the rabies vaccine off for a while longer. I would at least wait 2 to 3 weeks after his other vaccines. I think it's best to try and put the rabies vaccine off until 5 or 6 months of age if you can. You do need it by law but I doubt anything will happen if you put it off. I haven't even decided if I'll vaccinate my adults for rabies next time theirs is due. I just don't agree with it being given every three years. Too many vaccines are so bad for them |
charlie is 7 months old and has not have his rabies shot yet. He is up to date with all his other shots. The vet at petco thought it is better to wait since his a small. |
If you put it off and Tobie were to bite someone, Oklahoma law requires that he be quarantined for ten days at either a veterinarian's office or animal control. Obviously, you would be responsible for the cost of the quarantine. FYI, if a dog who is current on his rabies vaccination bites in Oklahoma, the ten day quarantine can be done at home. |
It's Your Pup! Apple was 5 months old, yesterday...she completed her puppy shots on her 4th month birthday...The vet wants to do the rabies @ 5 months, but I'm not having it...It's true you will have to be sure she doesn't bite anyone, but is she around any animals that have rabies, does she bite, is she out at night, when there might be bats out? I don't let Apple out at night, and she's never been exposed to anything that might have rabies, so I'm waiting 'till she's 6 months old...And if she doesn't weigh at least 4 lbs., I'll probably wait longer...I hope I don't get bombed w/negative posts, but I'm old school, where you didn't vaccinate for rabies 'till after they were 6 months old...And don't be afraid to tell the Vet whatever you are comfortable with...One nice thing about living on the planet as long as I have, is I don't let people tell me what I want to do...I gather all the information I can, then I make a "gut level" decision, based on that information....All the best to you with "your" decision... when roxie was that age my vet wouldn't do the rabies. they said the other shots were more important first and she just likes to wait a bit longer because roxie was so small. |
