What age did you pick your pup? I am starting to look for another pup, and I rang a breeder and she has 4wk old males. She said she will ring in a few weeks when they are ready to be seen. Is this normal? (I'm not talking about taking home, just going to see them to pick). Was thinking at 4wks they wont have much personality to distinguish between the 2. |
not sure if it's normal, but I know some breeders want to see if the pups are ones they want to put in shows and they need to be a little bigger. Also pups are delicate at this early age and can catch colds easy, so it might be easier to have less contact with "strangers" I got my pup at 12 weeks, but I think you can safely get them at 8. I think the more time they have with their mommy/litter the more the pup will learn from them and the less headache I will have at home. :) |
no, both are for sale. They are not for show. |
Hmmmm... that seems to soon for me personally. I've have two litters of puppies and at 4 weeks I still couldn't tell who was who. :D I guess it wouldn't hurt to go see them and atleast you'll get an early start on falling in love. ;) |

She is good to wait, you can't tell much at that age anyway, and I don't think it's that great for people to be handling young pups. |
i went to my breeder to look at pups that were 8 and 12 weeks old. however she also had another litter of 4 week olds and that is where i ended up getting my puppy from. The only reason i kept track of her as she got older was because she had two white toes on her hind leg. |
Oh-ok...waiting is good. I got Josie when she was 14 weeks old. I got my Jojo at 15 weeks. We sold our first batch of puppies at 13 weeks. The second batch were all gone by the time they were 14 weeks weeks. I think anything after 12 weeks is a good time. |
My breeder wouldn't let anybody see her puppies until they were 6 weeks old. I brought my puppy home at 10 weeks. |
I think most really good breeders will have persepective buyers wait until their babies are old enough to be looked at around 10 weeks. They are not ready to leave until 12 weeks old. 4males , how exciting! I wish you all the joy and happiness a new yorkie puppy will bring to your life :) |
Well, we took Zoë home at 11.5 weeks. I'd seen pictures of her since she was just a few weeks old. We made a trip to visit and "picked her" when she was 6 weeks old. She had just started to have her own personality, but the puppy we saw at 6 weeks was VERY different than the puppy we took home, still adorable and still the best puppy ever. :p I think the breeder is doing her best for you, at 4 weeks old they aren't old enough to tell much of a difference and which would be best for you. 6 weeks may be a bit too young, but once you get to 8, 10, 12 weeks then you can for sure tell differences in personalities. It does vary though, there are people that never see their dog before taking it home (so they would pick their puppy at 12-18 weeks). Best of luck! I'm sure you'll find the most perfect puppy for you! -Vicky & Zoë |
I agree, around 10 weeks to visit. They will have tons of personality and little furry faces. 12 to 14 weeks is a good time to buy. They need their moms until they reach 12 weeks...Good luck.....Lissette |

We met Ella when she was 4 weeks old. She was still very little, but her personality was beginning to show. She loved to lay on my bf's foot, and even now at 9 months, she loves sleeping on feet. She also loved to nuzzle in our arms, and she's still a cuddler today. She tried to play and hung around with us all afternoon. We could have left with a 12-week-old boy that day, but we fell for Ella and waited until she was old enough to bring home. |
I looked at Riot's litter when they were two days over 5 weeks, and I picked him and put a deposit down the next day! I didn't bring him home until he was between 11 and 12 weeks old. |
