Washable Pads and Smell
 

Right now I am using disposable pads. We don't accumulate much garbage so it usually only gets taken out once a week. I used to just throw Layla's pee pads in the regular trash but the kitchen would get so smelly! This winter I started just putting them in a bag out on the deck. It was too cold for them to smell out there!
Anyways, now spring is arriving again and I need to come up with a new plan. I want to switch to washable pee pads so I'm looking seriously into that. I was thinking I could get enough for a week and just wash them all weekly. So then I was thinking I could use a diaper bin so they wouldn't be too smelly throughout the week. I have no children so you could imagine my surprise when I looked up diaper bins and found them costing over $300 :rolleyes:
So any of you with washable pee pads, how do you keep them from smelling until laundry day???

I brought about 12 washable pads. I try to wash them every three days. I put my washable pads in a clothes hamper that has a top and lining, which serves as a diaper bin for me. I got it cheap at Ross last year, and it serves the purpose of eliminating the bad smell.

i wash them about every other day and on the off days i put them in a plastic trash bag in my laundry room and keep the door closed lol. i have not noticed a bad smell since i started doing that :)

I keep our dirty ones out in the garage in a small plastic garbage can. I used to put the lid on it, but have found that they smell LESS if I leave it off. I guess the lack of air circulation was making them really rank:laugh:

I wash them about every 3 days or so.

I know this is going to sound crazy....but where do you get washable pee pee pads. I've been using disposable and it's a disaster. I really would like to use washable. At the moment, I have 2 rugs in their room, but I'm afraid that is going to send them the message that they can use the bathroom anywhere there are rugs or carpet. HELP!

I use a kitchen garbage can with a top, it is in my laundry room that is in the basement but you can't smell them until you take the top off to wash. I wash about every 3 days, sometimes a little longer. (I used that same kitchen garbage can as a diaper pail for cloth baby diapers too).. no reason to buy something that is more $$ just because it is called a diaper pail :)

My laundry room is behind our attached gargage so it is separate from the rest of the house. I use large pads and wash them every other day. I just fold them up and put them on the floor beside the washing machine. I never smell them.

I can't use the washable ones, bc the pee spreads and it doesn't dry. Mine are home for 10 hrs, and this doesn't work for us.

I use throw away pee pads. I buy (from the dollar store) a box of 100 small plastic diaper baggies and I fold up the pee pads really tight into the little plastic diaper baggies and tie in a tight knot. This little baggies actually have a gentle powder smell, so this solves that gross pee smell in the kitchen garbage ;)

I use disposable pads and when they're done I put them into a Diaper Genie. It has a twist-lock mechanism that keeps the smell out. When it comes time for garbage day, I take it to the garage and drop it into the garbage can. You just pull out the bottom and everything comes out in a plastic baggy that look like sausages links. I paid around $30 for mine at Walmart and the refills are usually $7-$9. I have the regular Diaper Genie, but I found this one on the Babies R Us website Diaper Genie II Disposable System. It's on sale for $25 :)

My roommate mentioned this to me before too. How many bags are in the refills? I'm just trying to figure out the cost now as opposed to washable ones :) There are 3 people living at my house and working full time so usually each person takes 2 nights a week for laundry, so it's tough to swing putting in a load every couple of days! But I still have the rest of my package of disposable ones to use up and the diaper genie is cheap so maybe I should try it out :)

It's totally awesome! I used to work at Toys R Us/Babies R Us and all the moms would always rave about it. One day I when I was at PetSmart, I saw a similar product (same twist-lock concept) for cat litter disposal and that's when it hit me that I could use the Diaper Genie! It really does lock out all the smell and is super convenient :thumbup:


The refills are kind of just one big plastic bag. They work like sausage links lol. It's one big bag that twists into smaller sections. They can hold a fair amount. I only have one Yorkie and the bin gets full in a week. Obviously it would be sooner if you had more than one dog. I don't really keep track of how often I change the refills, so unfortunately I can't give you an idea of that. I don't change them too often though. I think they last me atleast a month though. I normally bought the refills from my local grocery store as Walmart usually tended to be sold out of the regular refills and have a ton of refills for the other models. The prices of the refills recently went up $1-$3 so that sucks. But I just discovered that my Costco sells a pack of 3 for $18. I'm in Canada so these are in Canadian dollars...it'll most likley be less in US dollars.

I'm in Canada too :) I read on the website that they hold about 180 small diapers so it looks like it would last awhile for pads. I'm going to pick one up this weekend. Thanks for the info!

Oh, and just an idea...if you want to extend the time it takes to go through a refill, you could always just throw a couple (not-so-soiled) pads in the kitchen. I think 1-3 pads in the kitchener wouldn't smell too bad. Sometimes (if I'm not too lazy lol), I'll throw out the pad in the garbage bin in the garage right away. This kind of helps to extend the time between refills :)
