How do you choose a good looking pup?
 

:animal36 Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and haven't yet found my "perfect little pal," I'm asking for some advice on picking a Yorkie. I always see them as adults with the long flowing hair in a bow and that's the type I want mine to grow into but the puppies don't seem to look anything like the adults??? I usually see them looking so black and wonder when does the color change start.

BTW, does anyone know any GOOD Georgia breeders?

You look at their parents in person and can always hope the breeder might share with you pictures of or in-person the grandparents of the pup you are interested in. Make sure they're real and not just "posers" ;). And perhaps even take a look at the offsprings of the past litters of the same pairing, and so forth. Looking at the many puppy pictures in YT members' photo albums and also those posted in the general pictures forum of YT, helps to see the transition between a certain kind of "puppy look" to its adult appearance. Sort of the "before" and "after" pictures. Find an adult or several on YT you love the look of, see if pictures of their youth has been shared and/or their parents as well. Otherwise, skip all that and just politely ask if they wouldn't mind sharing with you the name of the breeder they used for their dog and also, if they would be so kind as to share with you also, the name of the sire and dam. That way, you might have a chance at getting one who looks just like theirs and a full blooded sibling at that!

When I wanted to make sure I got exactly what I was looking for I got Pixie a 13 month old from a show/reputable breeder who bred to the standard. I also got Roxie from her. I always look for a short nose as that is the look I prefer. Good luck.

They do look so different as puppies hey? I knew Missy was "the one" when I saw her in photos before even meeting her in person. When I went to view the litter, I picked her out right away. Both the Mom and Dad were gorgeous, so I had no qualms about taking her home. :)

I TOTALLY agree....Apple kept running up to me w/a toy; the others didn't....I knew right there, she was the one! And she was only 11 wks. old........

Hi there and Welcome to YT :) All Yorkie Puppies are black and tan at first. Then they will gradually start to change to their adult colors. Sometimes, though a Yorkie will stay that way... Forgive me, If I am incorrect.
I have Suzi, She just turned a yr old. I had her clipped down a few months ago. Her coat is growing back into a silver blue color. She has the tan underneath her chin. The tip of her tail has black on it. She looks so cute .
We also have a lot of YT members on here with really pretty gold or red Yorkies , it is amazing what different hair styles are Yorkies can be groomed in! I love to see al their pictures. You are right though. All the puppies are Black and Tan :thumbup: We also have members on here that have very beautiful Biewers :thumbup: And then other members that are looking for a yorkie just like you.

If you want to get a puppy who will grow up to look and act like a Yorkie is supposed to, you have to go to the reputable breeder who is carefully breeding to the standard.

It depends on if you are looking for pet quality or show potential. As they change so much, it is hard, even for seasoned breeders, to accurately predict what they are going to look like as an adult. As I am blessed to have Joan Gordon as a mentor, she has imparted much very good advice in selecting my yorkie puppies. #1. If you are going to show your Yorkie, do not purchase one under 6 mths. old (4 mths is recommended for pet). #2. Things to look at: Topline, tail set, ear set & size, color, coat texture, height to length ratio, bite, in a male - dropped testicles, and of big importance is attitude. Read Joan's book, The New Complete Yorkshire Terrier.
#3. In picking a breeder, I recommend going to dog shows and talking with breeders showing Yorkies. Often in the case of reputable breeders, you don't get to pick the breeder, they pick you. They want to make sure they are placing their yorkie in a good home, even the pets. Their love of the breed has lead them to the show ring - their desire to keep the standards of the breed has lead them to do their own breeding. I do not know of a single person that shows Yorkies (I am even including those I am not very fond of) that breeds their Yorkies just to sell and make money. They breed to try to get the best possible Yorkie for themself and sell those that don't meet that goal. That doesn't mean they aren't beautiful just that they are perfect enough for that breeder.

You are very fortunate. I have her book and have learned a great deal from it.
