True Yorkie Breed Hello everyone! I have a quick question about yorkies. My Tobi is now 10.6 pounds @ 6 months...and I was told by a friend that I dont have a full yorkie breed bc standards yorkies are anywhere btw 4 to 7 pounds. Is this true? My friend's yorkie is a little over 7 and 2 years old. Also, my Yorkie ears stand up but my friends yorkie's ears hang down something like a pekenese or poodle. Can someone please let me know....thanks :) |
I don't know, but he's cute! |
There are lots of yorkies over the standard weight one of mine included |
AKC standard iss below seven pounds. it issues no bottom weight. There are many, many gorgeous yorkies that are over standard. Unless you plan to breed, don't even worry about it. I am sure he is a fine pet!!!!!!!!:) |
Mine is 9.2 pounds at almost a year old...... She's just not show quality and that's just okay with me. :) |
Rosiegirl: thank you so much:) I love my Tobi and I know I was told he was full breed and I just wanted to make sure. I dont want a show dog or breed or anything just like to know the facts/background about my baby. Thanks everyone for your input...I really appreciate it :D |
Lucky you to have a "Teapot" on your hands. The standard, already mentioned, is 7lbs and under. There are many Yorkies above the standard but they are still Yorkies. Buddy is 16lbs and he's so handsome. Congratulations. If your not breeding you won't be dissapointed. In case you weren't aware the original Yorkie was up to 22lbs.:p Enjoy, |
Went through the same thing I went through the same thing with a neighbor who told me I "got ripped off" because Sully is almost 9 pounds and too big to be a Yorkie. I even have papers proving he's a Yorkie back 5 generations. My vet told me that although the AKC standard is 7 pounds, originally Yorkies were about 15 pounds. Yorkies are like a "box of chocolate - you never know what you're gonna get". Welcome to the "Teapot Club". PS - I'm hoping The Easter Bunny will leave a special "Yorkie Tootsie Roll" on my neighbors lawn next time we go for a walk. |

I have a teapot too! My yorkie is a bit bigger than standard too, but as I don't want to breed or show her size isn't an issue.....she's a gorgeous and spoiled family pet and is defintely all yorkie:D Let's see some pics of your baby - I bet he's a cutie! xxx |
My Bella is 13 lbs. and is without a doubt full Yorkie. The original Yorkies bred way back when were bigger then what we consider standard now and our teapots may have some of the genes from way back. Elaine |
gigi485: LOL! Thats too funny! I guess I can get my friend the same way! Thank you everyone I feel so much better bc she had me thinking I got ripped off and I even contacted the place I bought Tobi from and she proved to me he's full breed. I guess I have to get my baby a new bag of treats:D Oh and I (Tobi) will be joining the Teapot club :D |
