Now that you've met my yorkie..... (see "Yorkie or Silky" thread).....I have a question. While my dogs seem to be crazy about him and he loves to play with Toby, he has this habit of biting at their ankles. I guess that's to get them to play. Well, Skipper (pom, spitz mix) is older and doesn't like playing as much as Toby, and he has started just sitting down on his head when he nips his back ankles. It's so funny watching him trying to get his head from under Skippers VERY hairy butt. He occasionally bites at my ankles as well, but he doesn't bite hard. And my cat has let him know that she will absolutely NOT tolerate ankle biting. Even though he does'n't bite hard, I suppose this is a habit I need to break him of. Any suggestions? Since he has been abused, I certainly don't want to do anything to scare him, since he's now settled in here. Edited to add that he's been with me about a month, was with my mom a couple weeks before that. |
He'll probably outgrow it. He's probably very happy to have playmates. Different things work with different yorkies. Sometimes rubbing a bit of bitter apple spray on their snout will, after a few times, cause them to stop a behavior such as this. Somebody on here says to grab them by the scruff as their mother would do and shake them (not too roughly) but use a forceful voice and say no. I'm not much of a disciplinarian, so thank goodness I've never had to be tested to a great degree. ;) I've been pretty lucky in having fairly well-behaved puppies. |
Well, I don't think it bothers my other dogs too much. Skipper just started with this sitting on his head bit....LOL. Toby doesn't at all and he lets him crawl all over him. I don't know what the cat did (she is declawed), but he doesn't do it to her anymore. |
Well what I do when my dogs bark or bite is squirt them with a squirt gun. I think that might be too agressive for a dog thats been abused though. You might try shaking a can with change in it and saying no bite. I hope that helps. They do outgrow the biting stage though. |
I've got to add that I'd love to see him sitting on his head! That would be a hoot! :D |
