help on purchasing a new 1.8oz female yorki advice please??? Hello everyone, I’m here because I am getting ready to purchase this yorkie, but I am in a little dilemma, and I was hopeing that someone can give me good advice. About a month ago I purchased a poodle for my girlfriend, the poodle was 1.5oz, the store owner told me that the puppy had 2 cases of hypoglycemia, and that it was normal, My girlfriend fell in love with her instantly, so we bought her, later in the day the poodle got sick and I brought her back to the pet store thinking that they could help her better then I can. The next morning the poodle died, The dilemma is that the owner says that he'll give me credit, he has a yorkie there that my girlfriend fell in love with and we are thinking of getting, unfortunately the yorkie had and iv, because of hypoglycemia. I dont want to buy this pup if she is sick. Is this problem normal? And also when she passed stool I saw a little blood around the stool, not mixed in thought. I really like her, but so afraid that she might be sick like my poodle. What should i do? |

with smaller pups hypoglycemia is normal yes...... but i cant stress this enough, PLEASE dont buy puppies from a petstore you will be supporting puppy mills. these kind of puppies are notorious for being sickly...... if i were you i would attempt to get your money back....... |

Ditto! Please find a reputable breeder. You'll find lots and lots of useful info on this forum. Good luck getting your money back. :) |

That is so sad. I find all of a sudden it is my mission in life to tell anyone who asks NOT to buy a puppy from a puppy store. And believe me, with Rocco, I get asked a LOT. Yorkies and other purebred dogs have enough health concerns already without having to worry about being from a puppy mill. If you can't get your money back and you still want a puppy, go with a mix, maybe? You might get a healthier pup as there is less chance of inbreeding at the puppy mill. If you want the Yorkie, buy her, and you will be saving her! Just remember that she needs lots of care and everything is meant to be. Maybe you were meant to be this little yorkies parents! :) |

If you do decide to get that one, I'd recommend immediately taking it to the vet to see if the Yorkie is healthy, but as others have said, if you can, try to get your money back and get it from a breeder that's honorable. |

Double Ditto Double Ditto...and I have had tinies for decades..and with reasonable, common sense care they rarely have problems.. pet stores sell tinies to buyers with no clue as to how to feed them, they are put in many stressful situations the first week..my tinies stay until 16 weeks...some longer. Good luck |

Dittos.....Buying from a pet store just supports the puppy mills... But I do know how it is to fall in love with those beautiful faces. Do try to get you money back if possible...If not, I agree...go with a mixed breed (and there are some adorable mixed puppies out there!!) If you do get the yorkie....get her straight to the vet. He/she will likely know to check for all the stomach/gut problems and can advise you about the hypoglycemia (low blood suger) issues. How old is the puppy??? (like they will even tell you the truth) How mych does she weigh?? Who, at the pet store, is treating her with an IV??? Good luck.....Let us know how she does.....(if you do get her). |

Blood in the stool too? Hypoglycemia might not be the only problem. I have only had two dogs have hypoglycemia and neither had blood in their stools, I dont know what others experience is. Im afraid you might take this little baby home and you will spending a great amount of time at the vet or worse it may suffer the same as the baby poodle. Whatever you decide........I wish that your puppy will be healthy! |

Being tiny doesnt always mean there will be a problem. My oldest Yorkie weighed in at 8ounces when I bought her home at 7weeks old and she has NEVER had a single problem of any kind...But this yorkie seems to be having a bad start already and that just doesnt seem right to me at all.It could be nothing, maybe she just has cocidia (sp?) but I honestly wouldent buy her if she seems to be having problems..especially if you already had the same problems with the first pup.I would tell the manager of the store to give me my money back and start searching else where and save alot of heart ache. What you dont want is to spend $x on a pup and then spend your life savings on vet bills because its ill.In my experience pet store pups are more expensive than alot of breeders too..I would pass on the yorkie pup. |

I would have to agree with Chelsie1978. I believe you are only opening up yourself to costly vet bills and possible heartache. There are so many puppies out there, healthy one's at that. Take the time to find a great breeder you trust and you will be led to a great puppy with probably years and years of happy times with your new Yorkie. |

i would love to get my money back, but the problem here is that i only have credit with him, he has about a thousand for mine and is asking another 800 for the yorkie. I really dont know what to do besides to get another puppy or just take him, to court, but that would cost too. |

I didn't realize the pet store was only giving you a credit towards another pup in their store. My only advise then would to wait until they have a healthier pup in their store. I just think you would take too many chances with this Yorkie there now. I understand how hard it might be also to pass this Yorkie up too so best wishes if you decide to take this little one their now home with you. If you do decide to take this little Yorkie that the store has now keep us posted. |

Don't you think this dog probably has the same thing your other pup had? Seems pretty much like they would have both been infected from the same place. I would not take him until he is off the IVs and has a health certificate from the vet. You are asking for BIG Vet bills and a very sick puppy. It is your right to have it in good health and checked out by a vet. Good Luck! Pat |

i would probably take him to court,..... but thats just me..... it only costs $20 or so to file a claim agaisnt someone..... and i think you would win because of the "unhealthy merchandise" he is offering to replace youre last puppy with |

If you paid for the Yorkie via credit card, you can call the credit card company and have the charge reversed! Then you have your money back... |

If you do decide to take the Yorkie, see if you can get an agreement to have the pet store pay all vet bills associated with the pup's present condition, i.e. hypoglycemia and perhaps coccidiosis, which would account for blood in the stool. Whatever you do, get it in writing. If possible, I would wait until they got another, healthier puppy for you. Yorkies are wonderful but the heartbreak at losing one is just awful. |

I agree with everyone else.. I would not buy that puppy from the store. Seems to me that that puppy has more than one problem.. That blood in the stool is not normal and hypoglciema is not easy either.. If you are having trouble getting the money back go for a mixed breed as evryone else said. If not I wuold go straight to a reputable breeder. Good lUck!! -Alexandra and Tikki :) |

Lots of questions for YorkieRose Quote:
YorkieRose, you sound pretty knowledgeable when it comes to the tiny yorkies. And I would love to discuss some questions that I have further with you about them. My Yorkie, the one I am adopting is 6pounds. He is small, but not so small that I have to worry about liver shunts or multiple shunts or epilepsy, etc. I don't know all the health concerns attached to the very small ones, since things like luxating patellas and collapsed trachea come in the different sizes as far as the breed goes. I would like to know if you breed any that have the potential for showing? Maybe not on a big scale, but say local and maybe state levels? How do you determine other than by DNA and of course knowing the parentage of the pups whether they will be show quality or not when they are just little furbabies? Is it more like an educated guess? When thinking about getting into showing maybe a couple females, is it allowed for them to be spayed? and still show in the ring? or are there rules about that? With AKC I mean. Another question, I very very rarely see the blue yorkies. Why is that? The one I have for example I just think he is beautiful, but he is definately not a black and tan. He is blond and silver. Have you ever heard of such a color combo? Myy vet said he is just gorgeous, and I think so too. But I dont think he is actually the norm? am I correct in thinking this? Do you have a web page? Do you still breed? I assume you do from your posts, but would like to ask, and feel free to PM me if you would rather. Do you ever sell your litters with full registration? giving the guardians of your baby the breeding rights and the showing rights? It's nice to meet someone who seems to have a pretty good head on their shoulders and your advice here in the forum is usually impeccable which is why I am asking you these questions. Another question. Do you do your own docking and dew claws? Is there any info on the internet that shows this in any detail with pictures, or shockwave video?? where you can actually see it being performed? I found a site that has shockwave video for the anal glands, since I just got a rescue in that had full anal glands, and the site it so good that it was actually not a problem at all to express them just by watching and reading the webpage. It was pretty interesting, and to tell you the truth, I had no idea about these glands before I met scooter!! His were so obvioius though and I could tell by the way he was walking semi bowlegged that he was suffering with them. So I just googled it and found this great site, not that it is a great thing to have to deal with by any means, but nice when a site is that specific that you can learn by watching. I hope you can give me some of my answers, or heck all of them if you have the time as I feel you know our Breed pretty well and would more or less by this time be an authority if by no other means than experience. Thanks for looking over my query, and hope to hear back from you soon   |

Lauri! Just a quick question not about Yorkies! How do you like your African Grey? I lost my Amazon and am thinking of buying a Grey. Are they very loud? By that I mean screeching a lot? My Amazon was really, really loud! Do you own a Dongo or a Temeth? Thanks! Pat |

Pat, Totally no, not screechers or screamers or obnoxious noise makers at all. They have a wonderful word/song every morning that I wake up to, and enjoy while I go about getting ready for the day. Of course you probably know they are the SMARTEST of all the Parrot breed, they have the most expanded vocabulary, and they are by far and away the most loving of all the hookbills out there. I've had Sweetie since she was old enough to leave the nest and I had a wonderful breeder that I purchased her from. Her babies are very very bonded and socialized before you get to have them, no matter how long that process takes! I used to have a Blue and Gold Macaw and he was so rude!!! When I finally found him a good home many many years ago now he was their absolutely perfect bird!! I will never figure it out. He was a biter, terrorizer, mean and spiteful, aggravating pain in the a@#. It took me about 1 week to realize my mistake when I got him. He was 1800 bucks of all mean and evil feathers wrapped up in a 3 foot frame!! He had my Sweetie so intimidated that she wouldn't make a peep. This probably stunted her emotional growth some since he was such a bully. But now 7 years later she has blossomed into the most wonderful bird anyone could ever hope to flock with. She takes showers with me, perched on my shoulder. She preens my hair, which is very long (waist) and will literally do it for hours and hours if I would let her. She is caged trained where she poops before she comes out to sit somewhere on me. She is intrigued by all the other animals, cat, dogs, and of course my skingrandkids. She does NOT like strangers, and never has and never will. She is a gentle eater and will very delicately take food from my hand or my mouth into her own. She gives me (only me) lip kisses, but I draw the line at reguratation (sp) and tounging!!! LOL If you are thinking about getting an African Gray, by all means do so. They live about a hundred years plus, so you must keep this in mind when purchasing. You have to have a forever plan in place in the eventual event of you passing on. They will grieve themselves to death over the loss of their feather mate, which would be you. It's a really terrible sight to see when they go into this stage, and most never come out of it. So make sure you try and have someone else, much younger than you spend time early on with the bird so that the transition some day would be a smooth one. And of course, they should do the same. Well as usual, I wrote a book. sorry about that. But you would not be sorry 1 day to own an African Gray. I don't know where you are, but if you are within driving distance to Baton Rouge Louisiana, then I would be happy to share with you my breeder, she has a web page that you can go to, although I don't remember it anymore after all these years. I do know where she lives and know her name though so it shouldn't be a huge feat to find out her internet site. Anyway. LOL hope that helps!!! |

Laura! Thank you so very much for all the information! I have been trying to connect with someone who would tell it like it is. I WANT ONE NOW! I live in Butte, Montana, so that is a ways to go, huh? There is a breeder about 130 miles from here, but I'm not sure if she does Congos. I know she had a Tehmah when I bought my Amazon. Oh Boy he was loud. A good talker, though. I went for a Grey, but he growled at me and I thought he didn't like me. I never knew at the time that they growled! Live and learn! By the way, you never answered if your Grey was a Congo or Tehmah? Thank YOu so VEry Much! Pat |
