Black/Tan coloring vs Silvery, Blue I've recently stepped up my search for a female Yorkie. I really want an all black and tan one. I really don't like the silvery, blue color on some Yorkies (apologies for those that love that color or have Yorkies with that color). Is it fairly safe to say that if the mom and dad have no silvery blue then their kids won't either? Also, if one parent has blue and the other doesn't, is blue generally a recessive or a dominant gene? Thanks, Steve |
I'm not an expert, but I think most of them are born black/tan, and turn gold head/legs/and silver body...I felt like you, in the beginning, wishing my yorkie would stay black and tan, but now the silver is coming in, I can't wait to get the black cut off, someday, so she looks like a real yorkie lol...I heard someone say, on this site, that yorkies are like a box of chocolates..you don't know what you're going to get, 'till you bite into one....(maybe that wasn't it, but you get the drift)...Anyway, I can tell you, for sure, that whatever color your baby turns out to be, you will love him/her, as these yorkies absolutely own our hearts...You'll see....lol Love, Maggie & Apple:yorkiesar p.s...they do have the parti color ones, I think? maybe you'd like to check into that? |
I think it's hard to really determine what color coat a pup will turn out to be as an adult unless your go way back into the line to make sure all parents, grandparents etc has black and gold coats. Most, to my knowledge, will turn silver, the preferred adult coat. I'm like you. I love the black and gold. Buddy is black and gold at 5yrs old but when his coat is allowed to grow he will turn silver with gold streaks, however, his roots are always jet black. I just groomed him down and he's black once again. Buying a puppy because he's black and gold won't guarantee his adult coat will be that color. Buy your puppy because you have a connection with him. When he grow's you won't care what color he is. I am willing to bet you on that. Good luck, |

I wanted the same thing. But now, Jackson's got some silver on his head and I can see silver roots on his body and I'm anxious to see him with the silver coloring! I can already tell his head is turning all gold and the "white" is going away on his head already! |

From what I've been told, if a yorkie pup has white on his head he will be gold not tan as an adult. So if you want gold that color you can be sure of getting if he has white on his head. Buddy had white on his head and chest as a pup. As he got older he lost the white and turned golden not tan. As least you'll be sure of getting one of the two color's you prefer. Possibly. Nothing is written in stone. |
All 3 of mine are pretty much black and tan. Cali who is going to be 4 is still all black and tan, Pixie who is 3 just recently started getting a little silver in her black but is still pretty black. Roxie is 1 1/2 and really dark even her head has not cleared much. I was hoping one of mine would be lighter I love the silvery blue. |

Here's a pic, you can kind of see the gold going up his head and taking over the white! I love it. And the whiteish roots on his black body puppy fur seem to be more like a black/silverish. Who knows!! |
In our case, Belle is black/gold....Both of her parents were this gorgeous silvery color...I fell in love with them....And she never changed colors...She is as black and gold as can be...I love it but would have loved the light silvery color..Go figure You can see how black she in my avatar Joyce |
1 Attachment(s) Momo stayed blk & tan w/a little greying on the top of his head. I swear I can see reddish & bluish hues when he's in the sun. Never met his mom & dad, so I had no clue how he was gonna turn out. I personally love the blue & tan coloring, but I love my Momo no matter what his color is!:D |
Welll I have a silver blue yorkie girl , who just turned a yr old. She is very pretty. AS a puppy she had the black and tan. I always get compliments on the way she looks . I think she is pretty cute too :) |
What about the camera flash... 1 Attachment(s) Quote:
People have said that my little black and tan girl will be silver and gold because the camera flash in her eyes is green. If it is red the dog will be black and tan? Here is a pic of her as a baby looking like a green eyed demon. |

3 Attachment(s) My lil Gucci man is black and gold and I am pretty sure he will stay that way. He hasn't cleared really anything at all lol not even on his head. I ADORE HIS COLOR!! I love the silver and tans as well but I prefer the darker. I don't know what his parents looked like, but I am sure you can get a black and gold from blue parents or a blue and silver from black parents. I get messages daily asking about how one can get a Yorkie like Gucci but to be honest, he just picked me and I am in love with him .. there was no science to that .. maybe a lil chemistry :p I too see reddish hints in his coat from the sun Here is his pic |

Eye Shine |

many articles are printed about eye shine and most of them are feuled by a rumor that was started many years ago in the show world and continues to go around. Your old time breeders and show people put no store at all in eye shine. I don't even pay attention to it. I have had the same dog have green eyeshine, orange eyeshine and one of each in the same picture. no merit to that theory altho no one really seems to know where the rumor go started and it was probably forty years ago that it got started around. Too many factors influence eye shine. That being said, I have a little black and reddish gold female i kept back from two very blue/gold parents (that is what some folks call silver). |

It was my understanding that the flash from a camera showing green eyes on a dog (yorkie) would mean that dog has a silky coat and if they flashed red it would be a cottony coat. Buddy's flashes emerald green and his coat is a prue silky one. Your pup is just adorable. What a sweet face. |

He's a very handsome boy. He does appear to have Buddy's coloring. Good luck with him. No matter what his back does, if it does change, his gold will not. |
I have 2 Yorkies who are all black and tan. The breeders who I got both of them from only breed with black and tan so even an adult Yorkie does not change to that silvery color. My dogs are also curly, which is very uncommon for Yorkies. Quote:

Yorkies are dark silver blue and tan, they should not bee black/tan except when they are puppies. Yorkshire Terrier puppies are Black and tan, but then they loose theyre black color and get this beautiful dark silver blue color ;) Just read the standard: American Kennel Club - Yorkshire Terrier Yorkies are just in this one color, they should not be with much white markings (like biewer yorkies, they are just Maltese/yorkie mixes i think, theyre not pure yorkies). |
re: black/tan coloring vs. silvery blue That's very interesting about the white head turning gold...my Tank has a white head, but it's just now starting to change to gold. Joey has a few white hairs on his body, but they're coarse, and I've read that they will go away. Is that generally true? I think I'm gonna end up with one black and tan, and one blue and gold...that's how it's looking at this point. Either way, I agree with everyone - you love them no matter what color they are! |
My 17 1/2 yr old is very black and gold. She is beautiful to me. The only grey she has around her little mouth. I had a hard time finding another black and gold - but got one 2 months ago. She is 15 months and very black and gold. I pray she stays that color but I just found out her mother was silver so we'll just have to see. :) |

Yorkshire Terrier Club of America states: "The most distinctive characteristic of an adult Yorkshire Terrier is its long blue and tan silk coat. A puppy is born black and tan, but the only recognized colors for adults when registering with AKC are blue and gold, blue and tan, black and gold,or black and tan." Both of my Yorkies are black and tan and they are true Yorkies. They also have curly/wavy hair. I know long, straight hair is only recognized in the AKC but that doesn't mean they are not true Yorkies. :p Quote:
