Walking On The Back of the Couch!!! Apple will be 5 months old tomorrow, and I came around the corner to see her walking on the back of the couch:eek:....She's never been able to jump on the couch, before today, and it freaked me out! I put her down and she hasn't been back up top, yet...She did jump back on the couch, and down, but I'm wondering if ya'll let your yorkies do this, or stop them? Do they have enough sense not to jump off the top, as it's way too far down from that height? Thanks, Maggie & Apple:aimeeyork xoxoxo |
Both of mine walk on the back of the couch & loveseat & sleep ontop of it like a cat! Or when they're walking I call them little billy goats! They jump down onto the couch seats & then onto the floor. But they are both 2 yrs old. MOMMY TO PRECIOUS & PRINCESS:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
No, I don't. My Jemma is a little over 4 months. She loves to lay on my lap. She will jump off the chair but she can't jump on. I'm just too afraid that she'll jump off from a high spot. I would then freak!!! |
Twinkle does this - she thinks she's a cat:rolleyes: I freaked out when she did it as a puppy and I would lift her down and say 'No'.......she does it occasionally now though, luckily our sofa is quite low and she's quite big:) xxx |
Mine do it all the time and never jump from the back of the couch |
Mine have walked and slept on the back of the couch since they could get up there. It's like they think they are cats. |
Lucy and Rebel love the back of the sofa. They've both gotten up there as soon as they were able to. Neither jump from the back to the floor, it's always to the seat of the sofa, then to the floor. They can look out the window from there and use that position to "guard" the house and bark at squirrels. |
Tobie does that all the time too, it just scares me when he jumps off the back of the couch, like he is superman!! |
mine do this to ,seldom 1 has fell off the back that scares me cuz i'm afraid theyll geet hurt |
I can remember when we first got Lucky I did'nt think he would ever be able to jump on the couch or bed. lol. Then around 5 months old here he came. He struggled but he made it. Then to the back of the couch. I swear they are part cats. I am waiting for him to start meowing. lol....:) |
Our dog Teddy has been doing this since he was able to jump up there! He has NEVER jumped from the top, the worst he has done is jumped to the arm rest then off. But he usually jumps on the seat then the floor. Our puppy Pippo is starting to do this too. He jumps on a pillow or the arm rest then to the top. It makes me nervous when they are both up there, but he seems too afraid to jump. I think they like being up high, I wouldn't worry too much, as long as you don't mind!! :D |
Barley does get on the back of our couch. He has done it from the time we got him (as an adult). At first it seemed to be his comfort spot, now he does it to look out the windows. When he sees something out there, he will jump off the couch and run from the den into the office. There he will jump up onto the desk to get a better look out those windows too. Barley is a larger Yorkie at 8lbs though. IF he was a little one, I wouldn't let him do all this jumping. My toy poodle is tiny and she blew out her knee jumping off my daughter's bed. |
Glad to hear it all... Thanks for all the comments....Seems it's the norm, and I need to chill...lol Love Maggie & Apple:aimeeyork |
Bella does this all the time! She loves it up there cause she can lay and watch everything thats going on.. she wouldnt jump off the back though. |

Maggie used to jump off the back of the couch when we first got her to "escape" the family room! Since then she's all over the place and does still climb up there but doesn't have to jump to escape any longer as the room is now un-gated. I decided not to make a fuss about it because I figured it would be like kids...if you tell them not to do it, they do it even more. lol. She doesn't do it very often at all. |
Ellie used to look out the window from the back of the couch all the time. Then she would get into a barking frenzy and fall off. Thankfully she didn't break her neck.:rolleyes::rolleyes: For her own safety we moved the couch up against a wall. Now she goes up there but it is much safer for her. She can't really jump off because of how the set up is but I'm sure she could make that size jump. I'm pretty sure she is a monkey.:) Her poor knees.:( But then what do you do? "No" doesn't work for long and she can't be held 24/7 either. We just try to keep the jumping to a minimum. |
I sold a puppy once that got killed jumping off the back of a couch. The little girl was around 5 or 6 months old and weighed around 3 1/2 lbs. Her owners did not have carpet on their floor. The puppy took a flying leap off the top of the couch and landed wrong and broke her neck. So sad. There are definitely risks in letting them do it. Some of mine jump on the back of our couch to look out the window and have fallen off but they land on the windowsill and luckily don't get hurt. The little girl that was killed was petite with small bone structure and those are the ones that are really at risk of getting hurt when jumping. |
My Kadince also likes to sleep up there. We think it's because Fisher is too little to get up there. |
Pebbles and Doodlebug both will sleep on the back of the couch. Recently Doodlebug has cranked that up a notice to jumping onto me lap while I'm no the recliner, then onto my SHOULDER  up onto the very top on the recliner. But no that was just not enough because when he wants to get down he will then JUMP from the recliner onto the couch! He will only do this little stunt when the recliner is reclining and there is only about a foot or so between the two but OMG the first time he did it I almost had a heart attack! But I have to say that all three of mine are not tiny either and are over 10 lbs each. Now if I had a 3 or 4 lb baby I would be way more concerned about all of this catlike behavior they display. Bogey who is going to be 2 yr next month will only jump on the couch and I do not allow him to jump down because he has LP. BTW the first 2 will also jump onto my bed which is really high. Plus Doodlebug shocked me the other day and jumped onto the lap while I was sitting at the kitchen table~we have a pub table and chair that are like bar stool high! |
All of my dogs except for my sheltie walk on the back of my couch including my beagle. That'swere they like to sleep. Tucker will curl himself up around my neck when Im the couch with them. They dont jump from there though. That would scare the crap out of me. I definitly would put a stop to it, to many injuries could result. |
Max & Molly will both sleep on the back of the couch... I think its cute, especially when they are so close they are touching. :) |
Buddy is always on the back of the couches. We also have a recliner in between our couches, and when he jumps on the top of that, it rocks back and forth so he has to keep his balance. He has gotten very good at it, but he fell off once. He got up slowly like he had been scolded as was very sad. He wasn't hurt, but damn if it didn't break my heart! |
omg!! the back of the couch is lexi's favorite place. she hangs out there all day long and looks out the window... i wanted to move my furniture around, but i would never move that couch away from the window.. thats her spot |

My Mike does this too ... he's a little mountain goat He goes on anything he can climb |
I know some folks have their couches in the middle of a room and not against a wall. I would love to rearrange my furniture like that but I just never will because of the way mine get on the back of the couch. I think it is much safer when the couch is against a wall. |
I have never had an adult Yorkie that didn't jump but they usually dont until they are tall enough. |
