Puppy going to forever home at 6 weeks! This one bothered me so much I had to post. I hope I don't offend anyone by doing so. Yesterday, as I was leaving the mall, I noticed a couple pottying this very tiny puppy outside. I thought it might be a Yorkie mix. It was snowing. The poor thing had no sweater on, no harness, no collar, no tags, no leash. I asked the people what kind of dog it is, they told me a Yorkie Havanese mix. I asked the couple how old it was. They said "7 weeks" and that they got her 6 days ago. She was the most precious little thing, I wanted to put her in my coat and take her home. They said she is really friendly, socializing well with people. They have pee pads but she prefers to go potty outside. They have not yet had her seen by their own vet. They voiced concern that she is not eating well. They also said they never had a small breed puppy before and did not know how to care for it. I offered some of the most important advise about feeding, keeping nutri cal or Karo on hand and how to monitor for hypoglycemia. I was just appalled that "A", anyone would allow a pup to leave its litter at 6 weeks of age; "B" there had been no recent vet visit, they did not know how much she weighed; "C" they are allowing it to potty in areas exposed by other dogs; I don't need to mention the no harness, leash, collar or clothing. As we finished chatting, the gentleman picked the baby up and put her inside his coat which made me feel better. These people were very nice and thanked me for my guidance, but they genuinely seemed clueless. I wish people would do their homework before taking responsibility for such a helpless creature. I so wanted to take that baby home with me and care for her. |
wow, 7 weeks.... Yikes. i'd be a nervous wreck having one that tiny and fragile to care for. then not eating right:eek: And they not knowing what the heck they are doing! what a nightmare. If that baby makes it, I am certain she will be gorgeous. |
I can understand your frustration. As far as being upset that it hadn't been to the vet and they didn't know how much it weighed though, I don't understand. I have not brought my dogs to the vet the first week I had them. All of them had been to the vet within a week or 2 of me purchasing them to have vaccines and get checked out, and didn't need more vaccines for a couple of weeks or so, which I vax at home, so I didn't even bring them then, not until rabies was needed. If there were a problem at all I would take them in asap, but otherwise I don't. I don't think it's odd that a person doesn't know how much their dog weighs exactly either. The rest I completely understand. I have been trying to educate many people on kijiji and craigslist whenever I have the opportunity about the importance of toy breeds to be with the mom for 12 weeks. A couple of people have gotten attitudes, but most are friendly. |
That is really heartbreaking. What a poor little baby. I, too agree that anyone that has interest in a small breed animal should thoroughly do their homework. I was happy to hear the man tucked her into his coat as the weather was bad. It did sound as though she was loved at least...maybe just not cared for in the way she deserves to be. |
IF..... If I had the money, the time, and the ability, I would take all of the little helpless darlings home....I love them ALL....IF ONLY:aimeeyork |
I think I would have ask if there were others in the same litter and find out the name and phone # of the person who has/had them. I would also have ask how much the breeder is selling them for and if they said $100.00, I would offer that person $200.00. ;) I feel exactly like you do about how old a small breed puppy should be before leaving it's mom, and how to care for it properly. |
OH Wow, at 7 weeks is VERY young.. my yorkie jacks were just being weaned at that age.. I hope they follow what you told them and they look at more care tips on the net.. hugs, carmen in nj |
oh dear at 7 weeks it must be really tiny.can i ask wot hypoglycemia is? i dont have my little yorkie yet. i bring her home on the 18th of nxt month, im just trying to get as much info before i do. she will only be ten weeks. would u say thats still too young? is there anything else i should know about bringing a small dog home? or anything else to look out 4? ide b gratefull 4 anything u guys can tell me.. thanku:thumbup: |
I thought I should clarify my concern about the vet visit and the weight. All of the breeder contracts I have signed give 1 week to have the animal examined by a vet of my choice and return it if the baby did not check out health wise. If you don't know how much your baby weighs, and are not monitoring it, how do you know if it is losing weight vs. thriving? My point was more about my personal opinion on the importance of having my new babies examined within a week of getting them. Had I not done that with my Himalayan kitty, (and there was no breeder contract with him), I would not have known he was malnourished and would not have known what and when to feed him. I was told had I not gotten him and brought him to the vet when I did, he might not have made it. I guess I am extra sensitive as a result. |

I think it is a shame when these breeders let these babies go so early. I do however feel better knowing that they were receptive to the education they were getting from running into you. I'm sure that sweet baby will be just fine! Good job with educating! |
