My New Yorkie can Be Vicious! HELP The Yorkie we got from the pound a month ago is having some BIG problems. We need help or may need to find him another home. He bit me a few minutes ago; but didn't break the skin. Here's the problem; He seems to get along with my cats; lets them eat from his bowl and his water; BUT he went into their room to eat THEIR food and I tried to get him out; and he turned Vicious at me; snapping; snarling; baring his teeth; and wouldn't let ME out of the room. My husband came in and he still acted crazy; so my husband wrapped him in a towel and put him in his crate. Today he tried to mount two of my cats and when I tried to get him off the one female; he bit at me and went nuts with the snarling, baring his teeth, trying to bite and when my husband tried to pick him up; he went nuts with him and stood his ground against my husband. Finally he calmed down and my husband told him to sit and picked him up and put him in his crate. I need ADVICE. We are scared for my 6 year old daughter. He has been wonderful and kind except for these two episodes - which are very frightening and need to STOP. Maybe this is why he was in the pound. WHAT DO I DO? I'm heartbroken. We had him spayed and bought him toys and play with him a lot. He also barks whenever he's crated unless it's nighttime/bedtime. We put him up when we eat and when the cats are out cause he gets so crazy with them at times. I don't want to risk my daughter getting hurt and I don't want him to bite me or my husband. |

How old is he? I am not an expert by any means, but we also rescued a yorkie with aggression issues so I know how you are feeling. It sounds like he has some territory and possession issues that need to be worked on. As far as the barking in the crate, This is how we solved the issue. Get him used to the crate throughout the day randomly. Then whenever he barks you can either use a spray bottle or a can with pennies in it. (we used the spray bottle) and spary at him. Spray and say "quiet" or No bark the first five or so times. Then when he does it after that you can just say the word first. If he doesn't listen to the word then spray after saying the word. This has word amazingly for ours and she now knows that when we say quiet to stop. Every now and then we need to get the spray bottle but never have to spray it anymore becuase she knows. Good luck. I hope you can find a solution to this and don't have to find him a new home. |
Please just don't put him back at the pound, I fear they will PTS or just adopt out to anyone and this issue may happen again. If this is something that you feel can't be resolved or are just too fearful, please search around for reputable Yorkie Rescue (or Small Breed Rescue) in your area, as they will take him in, evaluate him and work on his behaviors and they will find an appropriate home for him, probably without other animals or children. BUT please do not dump him at the pound/shelter :( |
