What kind of eater is your Yorkie? I have observed over the years that some of my fur babies have strange eating habits. I am curious as to how everyone's babies behave at feeding time. I have had a couple of females that I will call 'scooter eaters'. They will eat what they want and then try to hide the plate from others by scooting it around. Sometimes it might end up under a table, a dresser or under a blanket. They just want to hide it. Sometime it takes me some searching to find out where it is. My worst eaters are those that are diggers. They take pleasure in taking the food off the plate with their paws and putting it on the floor. The other strange habit that some have is they like to eat in bed or on the couch. They will grab a mouthful of food and carry it to our bed or couch (which ever room they happen to be in when they get a hunger attack). Then of course I have had those that don't like to share and will growl as they eat and I had some that liked to guard to food bowls (very selfish :)) I know many of you have the picky eaters. I am very fortunate that I have not had many of them over the years. Now when it comes to treat time, most of mine are very good and patient. I do have two sisters that are like alligators when it comes to taking food from my hands. The others are very gentle. When I give treats I usually go from left to right but what is so cute is when the one on the left gets a treat then runs real fast to the right side to get in line for another one. These are sure smart little one. :) I would love to hear from everyone about your fur babies little eating quirks. |
Mine really dont have any eating quirks. They are both good eaters and always have been since they were pups. They are a little picky about what they will eat though. We have to put Jewels up on the table bench when she eats or Chachi will eat her food |
well miss buffey is my picky eater  'nuff said :D bentley is my piggy and the reason i cannot free feed - which i would really like to be able to do. he INHALES his food and basically chokes on it, spits it back up and swallows it again  . i have since started hand feeding him one piece at a time which is a PITA but at least he is chewing (sometimes! lol) and not choking bree is a funny eater. she takes one itty bitty piece at a time, runs over to a different place to eat it (sometimes her bed, sometimes across the room, where her heart desires right then), eats it and runs back for another :p none of my kids are food agressive. i started right away touching them, brushing them, taking their food away while they were eating, putting my fingers in their dish, etc. i never want to have a food aggressive dog. each will let the others eat out of their dish with no problems :) |
Noelle loves food but she takes her time eating it. She takes one piece from her bowl, takes it to the carpet and eats it, then goes back for another. It can take all day. |
Missy is one of the picky ones. It's part of the reason that I chose to homecook. She has a weird quirk too though. She has to leave her food sit (after I serve it) for at least 10 mins before she eats it. Then, when she's done, she picks up her plastic bowl and brings it to me. It's like she's clearing her own plate. :) |
Pablo will eat anything. He loves food. Lola is very dainty when she eats and Manolo is just my picky eater. |

Tobie just wants to eat what the other dogs are eating instead of eating his puppy food. I don't think it's because he doesn't like his food, I think it's because he wants to copy everything they do. lol |
Molly is too much of a piggy to do anything but wolf it down, then burp loudly! Thats my girl! :D |
one of mine is a picky eater and I have to hand feed him sometimes. both of them have to take their food to the carpet though to eat. they take one piece and take it to the carpet, eats it and then gets another piece takes it to the carpet. if I feed any wet food they take it out and put in on the tile and eat it off the tile. It drives my DH nuts but I just know I have to clean up after them when they have wet food. |
Mica used to be a picky eater before we had the other two girls and now with teh three of them it's like an eating competition to see who can eat the most the fastest...lol Lindi my nine month old's appetite seems to have dropped off quite a bit the last month or so. I'm thinking she may have stopped growing by now. :D |

She'll eat anything that isn't tied down! |
We just leave Buddy's bowl full all the time and he eats when he wants to. He is not food aggressive either. You can even grab his treats after you give them to him. Sometimes his mom let's him have bits of her banana in the morning. He just sits quietly and waits for his banana. The only think I worry about is he seems really skinny to me. I don't know how to get him to eat more. Maybe after he gets fixed? |

Juicy is definitely not a picky eater she would eat anything!! Her weird quirk is that she takes like 10 pieces of out the bowl one by one and puts them on her mat then will eat them one by one and then starts the process over.:) |
Buddy is every one's dream. You put the food down and it's gone in minutes. He does a low burp and on to play. He get's fed 6:30 am and 6:00 pm. I home cook and mix it with his kibble. We overcame food aggression. He now looks at me 1/2 way threw to mix it again with my hands so he can finish. Every feeding, everytime. I feel sorry for those of you who have such picky eater's, always worrying if they are eating enough. |

I have question for those that have yorkies that inhale their food. Would it be possible to find a healthy food they are not as crazy about or would they still inhale their food? Sometimes I wonder if I am not trying to hard to please my dogs offering them things they really love. Maybe I am encouraging them to eat too much. My vet gave me a sample of Canidae Grain Free Salmon Meal Formula and my dogs totally turned there nose up at it. I just looked at the analysis and it has 40% protein. That sure seems high. My babies have never seemed to like food with fish in them. I love hearing all these cute stories about everyone's fur babies. |
Buddy is about six pounds I think, but a little long. He has had plenty of blood work done because the doctor thought he may have had a shunt (but that has been a while). He may just be skinny. When it is time to see the vet again, I will make sure to ask about his weight. Thanks... |
When Suzi was a puppy she was more quirky. She use to take food out of her bowl and and eat it on the carpet one at a time. I would find kibble all over the place. LOL. Now she eats it "like a big girl" She burps after she eats too. I give her canned food now, and she loves that . But, she tends to eat too fast. Suzi is not a picky eater, and loves food. She even even eats the dropped cocketiel bird seeds. Suzi loves her treats , and does do anything unusual with them. With a bully stick, she will hide it . I don't even know where she places that. If I find it, she will hide it again somewhere else. I wonder what would happen if we got anther Yorkie? LOL . ;) |
Pao's eating quirks is being really picky although he has been doing well on homecooking. Even with homecooking, he has his quirks. He doesn't like beef and most fish that dogs can eat. Out of all the fishes that he can eat, he only likes salmon and will only tolerate it not more than 2 meals at a time. The food that he'd eat I can count with my fingers and the food he won't eat, that list is pretty long. When you see the way he picks his food, its a wonder...he puts his nose very close to the food and he picks bit by bit the food that he likes even if it is all blended up. When we used to try to feed him kibbles when he was younger, we had to resort to using a small soft toy to imitate another pup to compete food with him in his food bowl and he'd kinda eat or we'd toss one kibble at a time as if it is his toy and he'll pounce at it before he eats it one by one. For whatever reason, he doesn't like canned food either no matter what type of brand. |
Well, Jackson is picky but at the same time, he's not. It took a while to find a kibble he liked but he loves Merrick's Before Grain. The thing with him is - sometimes he just doesn't feel like eating. But when he does, he SCARFS it down. I don't even think he chews it sometimes, it's ridiculous, lol. Our schedule currently is... he gets kibble mixed in with wet food around 8:30am every morning. He eats that all up within 10 minutes usually. Breakfast is definitely his favorite meal of the day! :) Then I'll usually fill up his bowl with more kibble around lunch time and he'll nibble on it during the day and then around 6pm, he will start chomping down. He pretty much set his own schedule after breakfast time. At breakfast now though- I fill his bowl and make him sit before he gets it! |
