My Little Protector! Does your Yorkie bark about every little suspicious noise? Tobie just started doing this. Last night I fell asleep on the couch with him. Well, we have been having sleet and snow and the wind is blowing really hard. A few times during the night the wind blew really hard on our front door and it sounded like someone was trying to come in. Tobie was in a deep sleep and as soon as he heard this he jumped up and started barking at the door. I was asleep too and it gave me a heart attack! lol. Do all Yorkies think they have to be the protector of the house? :p |
LOL miss buffey is my protector!!! she is so funny. when we are sleeping and she hears something, she will bark real low and quiet at first to wake me me. once i wake up and tell her shhhh, it is okay, she will run to the edge of the bed and bark louder. then she runs and sits on my chest facing outward and growls. i think it is so cute she always jumps and sits on my chest - facing out - because i really think she thinks she is protecting her mommy :D ETA: my other kids do not really even move or make a peep when she hears something. so i guess she is the protector of everyone! lol |
Mine tried to protect me from ice in the sink the other day. we were snuggling on the counch and my husband had thrown out his drink in the sink and the ice sat on the top part of the drain and once it started to melt it fell all the way in the drain and he started barking like someone was breaking in. I kept telling him it was just ice but he was on high alert making sure everything was ok. |
Aww, that is so cute! I just think it's funny that they think they are so tough and scary. hehe |
Piper never really barked much at all. She is 10 months old now and recently she barks at every strange noise that she hears. She is now our Little Protector. |
Suzi did not start being a real barker until older. She turned a yr old on Mar.3 It has been warm in Cali and everybody has had their windows open. My darling sometimes will start with a low growl than bark her head off, or really cut loose and have a deep alarming bark , running to the door, back and forth to the window, very upset, all of this at 2am. wakes my son and I each time, Suzi is such a good protector. we love her so much. A little dog, with such a huge bark. It is not her fault , it is all the noise , and she must tell us what is going on! |
Hot Rod will bark at noises, scares me to death! Then he gets Maggie going. lol. He usually is not a barker and Maggie has only barked 2x that I have heard. It was so funny the other day, there were at least 9 deer in our back yard and both of them went NUTS! They ran from the kitchen slider to to the sunroom and back. Lo and behold, they chased every single deer away. They were so proud of themselves. :) |
Tucker went through his first thunder storm last night. He was barking at it. My previous dog was terrified of the noise He would tremble, and get so nervous. as he got older, I was afraid it wpuld scasre him to death. Not my little 5 month old fierce Yorkie. He wanted to "get at it". Tucker's Mom |
Cassi is also not a barker as well, but whenever she hears something in the front or the back of our house, she'll start will low bark and will get increasingly louder until I go and check it out. One time she started barking really loud b/c she heard a noise in the back, I went to check it out, and low and behold I saw a huge dog in our backyard. Scared the heck out of me. Apparently one of our neighbors likes to walk their dog off the leash and doesn't care if her dog goes to other peoples back yard to do his/her potty. Anyway, one of these days we're going to have to install a gate in our backyard b/c my DH is getting annoyed at picking up all this poop from our neighbor's dog. |

My Rat Terrier used to be TERRIFIED of storms but her hearing isn't very good anymore so they don't bother her. When Oklahoma had that F5 tornado on May 3rd (I forget the year), I thought she was going to have a heart attack. The whole time she sat in a corner and shook and panted so hard. It was really scary! |

Noelle isn't a barker either but she did try to warn me of the evil dog in the dishwasher! LOL! She noticed her reflection in the front of the dishwasher, stopped, glared, backed up, and charged barking furiously! She looked at me and charged the dishwasher again! She kept it up until I picked her up, touched the dishwasher and tried to reassure her. She still walks by the dishwasher with a nasty sideways glance with a low growl. |
I don't have a protector...Sam doesn't bark at anything.. |

I think Pablo is going to be my Alpha because he is such a little protector too. |
All three of mine are like that but Maggie barks more often in the house. Mica barks in the yard and seriously thinks she's a guard dog. Lindi's only nine months and doesn't bark alot yet. From what I know about yorkies they may be small but part of their characteristics are that they are natural guard dogs. :animal36 |
chester is not a big barker, but certain things the newspaper being delivered at my neighbors place, he goes flying off the bed and I tell him its okay and he comes back to bed. He will lay between me and the noise to protect me, especially if Im at a motel or something. Nothing will get by a yorkie they are very alert |
Bella is a little protector also. We had some really windy days, and it would blow the front door and it sounded like someone was coming in, and she started barking and running towards the door and then back into the livingroom...or when shes outside she will see kids or other dogs and she barks all brave and then runs as fast as she can up on the porch...LOL She has also gotten to where she can tell whether or not its us or someone else coming to the door. She doesnt bark at us when we approach the door, she just goes nuts when we get in, but when we get company she knows they are there before they ring the door bell.:) |
Our little Harley is our protector!!! He is so cute. I really think yorkies think they are big dogs!!!!!! |
LOL, I took Nikko out for his morning pee the other day at the beginning of a big windstorm (we live kinda in the wild west/desert). It was his, and our, first windstorm out here. We walked back in the house, and I kept the door cracked for him like I normally do, since he likes to slip in and out during the day. A few minutes later he raced out the door and then raced back in, barking his head off. As it turns out, a humongous prickly 4ftx4ftx6ft tumbleweed had blown up over our 5ft tall fence and into our yard!!! "INTRUDER ALERT!!!! Gigantic dead bush has penetrated the perimeter!!! Make it go away mommy!!!!" It was kindof cool though... I'd never seen a tumbleweed up close in real life before. :-) Lauren & Nikko |
Jackson's like that!! He's not a terrible barker during the day or anything but if he's sleeping - and someone opens my bedroom door or something he's "AR AR AR AR AR" SO loud and obnoxious! lol. After he realizes it's someone he knows, he chills out. But it's so funny yet scary because he wakes me up so startled. |
Achilles doesn't bark a whole lot either however he nearly attacked my mom one night when she came to visit. My mom was in my room and Achilles and i were asleep on the couch. Apparently my mom woke up to get something to drink and Achilles let out the most ferocious bark i had ever heard. My mom and i both had to calm him down cause he was going off.... Guess he forgot mom was staying with us and thought she was a robber! :D |
Buddy is the same way. He barks his face off. We have one of those doggy doors that attach to your sliding glass door, and he will shoot outside when the neighbors come home. We have to call him back into the house. We are trying to train him to be less aggressive that way. When people come to the door, we are trying to clearly make it our territory, and get him to lay on the couch quietly. I think they are just little tough dogs that want to protect us. Sometimes when Buddy is really tough, he will kick his back legs like a Bull. It is hilarious! |
