Socializing Hey guys. As some you may know I am bringing a new yorkie baby into my home in a couple weeks. I have a little girl, Bailee, who is almost a year old. She hasn't ever been around other dogs, due to her being our first baby. The town I live in doesn't have a doggie park either :( So I'm wondering what everyones opinion is as to how she will do when we bring in the new baby girl. Should I be worried? Should I keep them separated? Any input would be extremely useful!! |
I would probably introduce them slowly. When you bring the new puppy inside, put it/leave it in the crate for a bit and let them sniff each other through there. Then after a little bit, let the puppy out and see how your current dog reacts. Even if they don't get along at first, don't get down! It took about 2-3 weeks for my mom's older dog to accept Jackson into her life. Now they are the best of friends. Always be sure to give your older dog MORE attention so she knows she is still very important. |

Congrats on the new baby! I'm sure you are just beside yourself with eager anticipation. :) If at all possible, can they begin meeting now at the puppies current home? If not, it would be beneficial to take Bailey with you when you go pick up the puppy and let her meet her somewhere other then "Bailey's" home. If they can meet on neutral ground then Bailey's first interaction won't be having to 'protect' her home turf. Also, don't be stressing and fretful about the meeting and them getting along. Bailey will surly pick up on your nerves and can in turn, be nervous. |
As Ceasar would say introduce them in neutral territory, not in the home, let them check each other out. Good luck with your new bundle of joy. |
